Part 2 – About the Role

Great St Mary’s is the university church at the heart of Cambridge. Thanks to a Heritage Lottery grant, we are launching a Heritage Education Centre showcasing the remarkable history of Great St Mary’s and the significant role it has played in the history of the University and City of Cambridge.

As part of the project we will be running a programme of high-profile events in Cambridge throughout

2014, in connection with the Tour de France, Great War commemorations and the 450th anniversary of

Queen Elizabeth I visiting Cambridge.

We are looking for an events co-ordinator who will collaborate with the Heritage Education Officer in planning a number of heritage-themed events in central Cambridge.

The role will involve:

• Collaborating with the Heritage Education Officer and Parish Secretary to co-ordinate a programme of events in 2014, including the Big Weekend/Tour de France, WWI events in early

August and an Elizabethan pageant on 13 September

• Writing proposals (timelines, venues, suppliers, health and safety, budgets)

• Contributing to volunteer recruitment efforts

• Leading family activities during the Summer holidays

• Liaising with potential venues, the council, suppliers, performers and sponsors

• Administrative support surrounding bookings, licences, insurance and invoices

• Publicity and marketing

• Organising participant evaluation for events

Much of the events co-ordinator’s role will be carried out from home at flexible times to suit you.

However, you will need to be able to travel to central Cambridge regularly for meetings with the

Heritage Education Officer and events held at Great St Mary’s. Ideally we are looking for a longterm volunteering commitment until Autumn 2014 to help our events programme run smoothly from the start.

• Part-time: up to 12 hours per week and longer hours in the immediate run-up to major events

• Long-term role – starting immediately, until Autumn 2014, with potential to continue after that

• Much of the role can be carried out from home

• Flexible hours

• Trial period

We are looking for a volunteer with:

• Events/project management experience

• An understanding of heritage and tourism within Cambridge, and lots of good ideas about how to make our events a success

• Strong organisational and administrative skills and experience with word-processing, mail merges and databases

• Excellent interpersonal skills. You will be approachable & self-aware, able to empathise with people from varied backgrounds and of all ages

• Reliability and the ability to manage your time and produce results efficiently and independently while meeting deadlines

• Strong communication, teamwork and negotiation skills; sales and/or marketing skills

• A keen interest in volunteering and in heritage

• Experience working with children

• As the role will largely be carried out from home, you will need access to a computer
