Position Purpose:
This position as Research Fellow in Obstetric Ultrasound is a 12 month appointments. The position
is accredited by the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists
(RANZCOG) for training in the subspecialty of Maternal Fetal Medicine or Obstetric and
Gynaecological Ultrasound.
 MBBS or equivalent;
 Advanced trainee in COGU or CMFM with RANZCOG

This is an externally funded research position
which will contribute to our understanding of
fetal growth disorders as a contributor to
stillbirth.

will be expected to:
 Supervise and manage junior trainees and
PhD students undertaking higher degree
research in disorders of fetal growth.
 It is expected that you will have a high level
of competency in obstetric ultrasound,
including advanced fetoplacental Doppler
assessments, such as uterine artery Doppler,
middle cerebral artery Doppler, ductus
venosus and aortic isthmus Doppler
measurement as well as measures of cardiac
function, such as myocardial performance
index etc
 Maintain contemporaneous records and
contribute to database entry for the
longitudinal fetal growth study
 Attend research meetings and liaise with
PhD students and their supervisors
 Attend Perinatal outpatient clinics and
ultrasound sessions as rostered.
 Provide ultrasound teaching and advisory
support to the Pregnancy Day Assessment
Service as required
The Research Fellow in Obstetric Ultrasound
will gain valuable experience in the conduct of
research and teaching. The Fellow will also be
part of the Perinatal Medicine Unit and, as
such, will continue to gain strong tertiary clinical
exposure relevant to the practice of MFM/
COGU:
 Learn advanced skills in the management of
complex obstetric medicine patients
necessary to function as an independent
specialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine

Become competent in obstetric diagnostic
and procedural ultrasound, and fetal
surveillance necessary to function as an
independent specialist
Become competent in the investigation,
diagnosis and management of women with
pregnancies complicated by fetal
abnormalities, requiring fetal therapy or at
high risk of perinatal complications or genetic
disorders
Develop a clear understanding of the
relevant maternal and fetal physiology
necessary to function as an independent
specialist
Develop a comprehensive knowledge of their
subspecialty as outlined in the subspecialty
handbook of the RANZCOG.
Have regular feedback about performance as
outlined in their RANZCOG subspecialty
training manual.
Provide teaching and training of other
medical (undergraduate and postgraduate),
midwifery and ultrasound staff.
To participate in multidisciplinary education
meetings as required within and outside own
hospital

Inform the Head, Perinatal Medicine as soon
as possible regarding: any incidents that
occur of a medico-legal nature, any
complaints received from patients or
relatives, any problems in regard to the
provision of services and equipment for the
care of patients.
Obtain permission of the Head, Perinatal
Medicine if it is necessary to leave the
hospital during a period of duty.

certificates as are necessary by the nature of
the appointment.
Maintain a proper record of symptoms,
examinations and treatment of all patients
allotted. Complete departmental request
forms for diagnostic purposes in accordance
with departmental and hospital regulation.
Participate in research programmes
undertaken by the Perinatal unit.
