FALL 2005 schedule of Art Classes
The Art School for Children and Young Adults
UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON-CLEAR LAKE
ART OF THE SOUTHWEST: Native American Indians,
O’Keefe and Remington
In fall 2005, students learn about the art and life of the Native American Indians. Their way of life produced
rich and beautiful works of art. Students will study Native American artifacts, ceramics, weaving and Kachina
figures to connect them with the past. The study of the artwork of Georgia O’Keefe and Frederic Remington
introduces additional perspectives of the Southwest. Students create their own expressions and responses by
drawing, painting and creating with clay.
Students in fourth grade and above may draw on selected elements of the study of the art of the Southwest or
focus on other artworks to lead them in developing skills and techniques of art production.
Enroll your child by carefully checking the preferred class or school location on the attached registration form.
A Message from Ann Waltz, Director
It is a great privilege to continue the work set in place by Mary Ann Boykin more than 25 years ago. The rich
content-based lessons continue as the core of our program. After working for nine years with Mrs. Boykin, a
smooth transition carried us through a great summer session. Our staff shares an enthusiastic goal of enriching
your student’s artistic knowledge and visual fluency. Thank you for the opportunity to provide your child with a
time and place to develop his or her creative skills.
THE ART SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS — UHCL offers programs for children
and young adults in the Bay Area and sponsors research in visual arts education. Faculty, art teachers and
university students work together to provide model art classes at the university and in public school locations. A
special focus of the curriculum is the art of the world’s varied cultures and the contributions of major artists.
Children are encouraged to progress at their own pace and to acquire skills appropriate to their developmental
level.
