The processor power is matched with a new advanced dual 256-bit path crossbar switch architecture with up to 5.2 GB/s of memory bandwidth. The AlphaServer ES40 supports up to 16 GB of ECC memory, with 32 GB on the horizon. For maximum reliability the AlphaServer ES40 incorporates redundant hot-swap power and cooling. Up to eight internal Ultra2 SCSI hot-swap drive bays provide up to 145 GB of internal storage inside the system chassis. Rack models can support up to 1.2 TB of storage headroom with a single rack. The Compaq AlphaServer ES40 is designed for mission-critical, line-of-business applications such as: Business -- SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle, and BAAN Database -- Oracle, Informix, and Sybase Business intelligence and datamart -- SAS, SAP/BW Internet/intranet and e-commerce -- Netscape, Apache, and Inktomi High-performance technical computing All models of the Compaq AlphaServer ES40 use a 19-inch rackmount system chassis that houses processors, memory, PCI subsystem, fans, and power supplies. An important new feature is the provision for two optional internal Ultra2 SCSI disk drive cages that support four drives each for a total of up to eight 1.6-inch drives. The Compaq AlphaServer ES40 is offered with a choice of two base chassis models. Model 1 systems support six PCI slots and up to 8GB of memory. Model 2 systems support 10 PCI slots and up to 16 GB of memory. Both models can be configured in a choice of three enclosures: Tower Model System chassis is rotated 90 degrees and packaged in a small-footprint, floor-standing enclosure for use in office environments. Pedestal Model System chassis is mounted in a 31-inch tall pedestal rack-compatible enclosure with space for three optional Compaq StorageWorks shelves (21 additional drives) for use in office and data center environments and where additional storage expansion is required. Rack Model Uses a 67-inch or 79-inch tall, 19-inch wide RETMA rack enclosure to house multiple systems and StorageWorks shelves. This configuration provides the ultimate in flexibility and expansion. All three models allow for easy servicing, redundant hot-swap cooling and power with maximum expansion capabilities. ServerWORKS, Compaq’s server and network management software, is included with the Compaq AlphaServer ES40, lowering total cost of ownership and making it easier to install, deploy, and manage servers and networks. Support for Compaq Insight Manager/XE will be available in mid-1999. The Compaq AlphaServer ES40, built for quality and reliability in highly networked enterprise environments, can be clustered with Compaq Tru64 UNIX and OpenVMS to achieve up to 99.9999% availability.
