Description
The Compaq AlphaServer DS10 Server is a high-performance, EV6 Alpha-based single-CPU server
designed as a low-cost, high performing modular system. The processor power, along with the sleek, new
3U design allows the server to be used as a desktop model or in a rackmount configuration. The
AlphaServer DS10 server was designed from the ground up with ECC memory, remote console
management, on-board IDE, and embedded network ports.
The AlphaServer DS10 is a no-frills entry-level server. It enables users to deploy their networking/data
center solutions using fewer racks, yet increases actual performance and still lowers total costs. Performing
two to three times faster than comparable systems, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can afford to dedicate
these low-cost, space-efficient servers to individual customers and/or applications. This strategy delivers
more customers/servers per square foot, which means greater revenue generated from the same space.
The AlphaServer DS10 is primarily intended for Internet, ISP, and telecommunications business solution
needs. It is also significant for the high-performance technical computing (HPTC) market, ISV/software
development, and university markets, as it incorporates high performance without the added costs
associated with unnecessary components. The DS10 can be customized to the exact needs of almost any
user requirements.
ServerWORKS, Compaq’s server and network management software included with the Compaq
AlphaServer DS10, lowers total cost of ownership and makes it easier to install, deploy, and manage servers
and networks. Support for Compaq Insight Manager/XE will be available in mid-1999. The AlphaServer
DS10 can be clustered under Tru64 UNIX, Windows NT, Linux, and OpenVMS operating systems to
achieve high availability. The server is built for quality and reliability in highly networked enterprise
environments.
The AlphaServer DS10 is designed for small to large commercial enterprises requiring a low-cost
application server platform using such applications as:

Database -- Oracle, Informix, and Sybase
Internet/intranet and e-commerce -- Netscape, Apache, and Microsoft IIS
High-performance technical computing
The Compaq AlphaServer DS10 uses a 3U desktop enclosure that can be mounted in a 19-inch rackmount
chassis. It can be mounted normally with disk access from the front and I/O and power access from the
back. Its elegant design uses a highly modular approach to providing high-end server capability to entrylevel packaging. The resulting high-density, compact form factor saves floor space and reduces the total
cost of ownership.
The Compaq AlphaServer DS10 can be configured in a choice of three cabinet sizes:
79-inch cabinet accommodates up to 12 DS10 systems
67-inch cabinet accommodates up to 10 DS10 systems
43-inch cabinet accommodates up to 4 DS10 systems
