Proficiency Test in Indonesian Commonly asked questions: 1. Who can take this test? At the University of Michigan, usually students from Engineering. Engineering will give students humanities credit for placing out of a language. Please contact Engineering to make sure that this is still standing. Find out about the credits that you could get from this as well. 2. Can LSA students take this test for credit? No. 3. Who should I contact if I want take this test? Please email Margaretha Sudarsih: sudarsih@umich.edu to make an appointment for the test. I would rather give the test to a group of students than individuals. So please arrange it with your friends before you contact me for an appointment. The only available time in this fall semester is Wednesday at 10:00 am – 12:00 pm at 3041 Frieze. 4. What is the test like? The test consists of: - Oral: a 10 –20 minutes interview, depending on the language level of the student. There is no set material for this. - Written: which takes up to two hours. It comprises grammar knowledge (multiple choice, isolated sentences), translation of everyday expression, and a short reading to test student’s reading comprehension and writing ability. This test is designed to cover the levels of the equivalent of four semesters of Indonesian at this University. 5. Can I prepare for the test? Yes. The test is based on the textbook used for four semesters of Indonesian at the University of Michigan. The book is Beginning Indonesian Through Self-Instruction by John Wolff. These books are available at the computer lab at the Language Resource Center (2nd Floor of Modern Languages Building). You may check out the books to read in the lab if you show you student ID. Look at chapters 1-25. 6. Can I look at the test to have an idea of what it is like? No. The test is the property of the University of Michigan, and it is confidential. 7. Is there any score for this test? No. The Lecturer in Indonesian will administer the test and write a statement describing the levels that the students passed in their test results. The statement will then be sent to the Department of Asian Languages & Cultures Student Administrator. The Administrator will write an official letter to Engineering. 8. If I am not happy with the results, can I re-take the test? No. You can only take the test once.
