ADVANCED NURSE PRACTITIONER – EMERGENCY CARE
QUALIFICATIONS
1.
Character
Candidates must be of good character.
2.
Health
Candidates shall:
a. be free from any defect or disease which would render them unsuitable to hold the office and
be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular
and efficient service;
b. be free from any disability which would interfere with the proper discharge of the duties of the
office;
or
c. be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular
and efficient service.
The appointee will be required to undergo a medical examination before appointment by the
Hospital’s Medical Examiner for the purpose of satisfying the requirements as to health.
3.
Garda Vetting
Applicants who do not comply with the Hospital’s requirements in this regard will be excluded
from the competition.

Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc.
Candidates must, on the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the office:
a.
Be a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner (RANP)on the live register maintained
by An Bord Altranais or eligible to be so registered
or
Be a Registered General Nurse on the live Register of Nurses maintained by An Bord
Altranais and be a Registered Children’s Nurse or be able to demonstrate specific
competencies and experience in children’s nursing.
b.
Hold a Masters Degree in Nursing. The clinical component of this programme must be
relevant to the field of practice.
c.
Have an accredited post registration qualification in Emergency Nursing, which is
greater than 26 weeks in duration.
d.
Have undertaken a competency-based clinical education programme in advanced
nursing practice incorporating adult and children’s emergency nursing. This clinical

programme may be part of the Masters Degree or taken in addition to the Masters
Degree.
e.
Have current certificates in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Paediatric Advanced
Life Support
f.
Hold a certificate in Nurse/Midwifery Prescribing or be willing to undertake this
programme within a contractually agreed timeframe.
g.
Have at least 7 years post registration experience, 5 years experience in emergency
nursing which must include both adult and paediatric practice.
h.
Have advanced knowledge and clinical expertise within a defined scope of practice.
i.
Have strategic planning and policy development skills.
j.
Have leadership and management skills.
k.
Be experienced in conducting audit, evidence based practice guidelines and research.
l.
Have knowledge of quality improvement, processes and principles.
m.
Have knowledge of professional development issues.
n.
Understand government health policy development.
o.
Have experience in multi-disciplinary clinical teaching.
p.
Have experience in designing and implementing nurse-led initiatives in clinical
practice.
q.
Have evidence of networking and negotiating with colleagues and members of allied
health professions.
r.
Be able to manage complex projects.
s.
Have involvement with a third level institution.
t.
Be familiar with the process of publishing work or have had work published
Applications submitted must clearly indicate, with supporting evidence/commentary where
necessary, that the applicant possesses the required qualifications and experience.
Applicants may be shortlisted on the basis of the information provided.
