FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the WEA?
The Workers’ Educational Association is the UK’s largest voluntary provider of adult education.
We were founded in 1903 and are a registered charity. We support the educational needs of adults and
are committed to providing access to education and learning to adults from all backgrounds.
We believe that education is life-long and should continue beyond school leaving age to give more
opportunities to people to update their skills, keep up with their children or just to meet people and have
a go at something new.
Who are WEA courses for?
At the WEA we welcome all adult learners. You need no previous experience or qualifications to join most
of our courses. Our course programme is interesting and varied and should offer something for everyone.
Where are courses held?
Courses are organised in community venues all across the region and in our study centre. So you should be
able to find a course near your home.
How much will it cost?
All course fees are as stated beside each course. We try to keep fees as low as possible and if you
receive or you are dependant on someone who receives income related benefit you will be entitled to full
fee remission.
In addition if you are on a low household income (below £15,276) you can apply for help with costs from
our Learner Support Fund. This is subject to circumstances and availability of funds. Please let us know if
you think you might be eligible or ask your tutor for details. You will need to provide proof of your
circumstances.
Who will support me?
Whilst on a course, learners are always supported by experienced tutors. Help is also on hand from
Learning Support Workers, Branch Members, WEA Volunteers and from fellow learners.
In addition, staff at our specialist study centres can offer advice, guidance and support to new and
existing learners.
What if I need extra support and will I be able to access all venues?
Wherever possible we use premises that are fully accessible.
If you have a physical disability or learning difficulty, we will do our best to provide staff and resources
to help you succeed on your course. Ask your tutor or contact the Study Centre for more details about
the Additional Learning Support Fund. It is helpful to let us know what you need before the course
starts, so support can be organised in good time.
Will I have to do an exam?
Many of our courses have no formal assessment and you agree what you want to achieve on the course
with your tutor. But we do also run courses that have some form of assessment, which can give you a
nationally recognised qualification. Assessment is often through coursework instead of a test and your
tutor will be able to give you help and advice on what is best for you.
What if I join and I don’t like it?
You can attend the first session of any course without obligation. If you like what you see, you can enrol.
If not, the tutor will advise you what other choices are available to you, or you could contact the Study
Centre.
