Canyon Crest Academy: Photography Lab
Prerequisite: Fine Art Digital Photography, and ONE of the advanced photo courses (either Advanced Digital
Photograpy or ROP Photo) and application to teacher.
Course Description
Photography Lab will be offered to a small group of students (1-4) embedded within all current Digital Photography
courses (Fine Art Digital Photography, Advanced Digital Photography, ROP Photo Imaging).
Students will work on independent projects and prepare portfolios for college and career opportunities in
photography, graphic design, and advertising. Students are selected for the course through an application process.
Students will explore, create, valuate, and criticize both fine art and commercial photography as an art form.
Students will also develop skills for image capture, editing, copy writing, equipment organization and maintenance,
leadership, marketing, and public relations. Photography Lab students will help with equipment management and
they will also serve as mentors for students in their embedded photography program classes. Students in
Photography Lab will also organize and provide leadership for campus art festivals and as well as public art displays
of student photography work. Using the art elements of form, color, and value, they will create and communicate
meaning through the photography medium. Course is repeatable for credit.
Grading
30% of the student’s grade comes from daily work in the photo room: Equipment management and organization,
photo tasks, and peer helping. Research assignments are required each month as well as photos to illustrate what
you’ve learned.
70% of the student’s grade comes from “Presentation Work,” which are major independent student projects. Two
projects per quarter due at Progress Reports and Quarter Grading periods.
Students will create a working Contract to satisfy Research and Presentation work.
Students seeking an A grade must complete all aspects of all assignments and turn them in on time. Grades, as well
as comments, are communicated via the Aeries portal.
Late Work
Completed projects and evaluations are due at the beginning of class on the due date. Late
work will lose one grade (10%) per class day that a project is late. All due dates are posted online in the class
calendar and announced in class.
"Re-grades"
Students may redo any on-time presentation work for a higher grade. A student will need to make
an appointment with me for a re-grade conference; the original grading sheet must be present at that conference.
All re-grades must be completed within ten school days of the posted grade.
Attendance
Prompt attendance to class is extremely important. Be seated in your assigned seat and ready to work when the bell
rings. The SDUHSD tardy policy is as follows: 1st tardy - teacher warning, 2nd - phone call home, 3rd – Saturday
School, 4th – referral to Assistant Principal.
Excused Absences: Students are responsible to learn the material and make up work missed during an excused absence.
Students are given “reasonable” time to make up missing work from each excused absence; after that time
assignments will be counted as late. Most of our assignments are multiple day projects that can be completed early.
Unexcused Absences are to be logged 5 days in advance of the absence through the following link
(https://docs.google.com/a/sduhsd.net/spreadsheet/viewform?usp=drive_web&formkey=dFJiYUlNdT
RMWGJtdFU1VkhiZDNCZUE6MA#gid=0) should the student wish to receive credit for work missing during
their absence. This will allow for the student and teacher to confer as to what needs to be completed and ready for
submission on the return of the student to class.
Students who are leaving during the school day for any reason are required to obtain the absence slip from the
Attendance Office during non-class time.
Classroom Rules & Expectations
 Be on time and on task for the duration of the class period.
 Bring your sketchbook to class everyday.
 Behave and dress appropriately and professionally in the classroom and on location.
 When on location, be only where you are permitted.
 No cell phones or electronic devices (bell-to-bell=NO CELL).
 No food or drink of any kind in the classroom.
All rules, regardless of location, exist from bell-to-bell because of the unique nature of photography assignments
outside of the classroom. Students who misbehave in anyway outside of the classroom, including being off task
while working with the camera, will have their camera privileges taken away.
Cell Phone Policy- Cell phones should be silent and invisible for the duration of the academic period. If these items
are out during class time, they will be confiscated and turned in to Administration.
The CCA Dishonesty Policy will be enforced. Any unauthorized collaboration, plagiarism, forgery, theft, or other
dishonest behavior will result in a zero grade, administrative referral, and parent contact.
Student produced images are celebrated and used in art shows and online galleries of class work. If you prefer to not
have your students appear in these photos please let me know on the attached form or by email request.
I am looking forward to the students’ work in Fine Art Digital Photography. I am continuously amazed - not only
by the work that the students generate but also by the students themselves. It is going to be a great experience for
all of us. I hope to see you at Back to School Night.
