PRESS RELEASE 15 January 2009 Today the Bulgarian National Bank announced the winners in the competition for scholarships granted by the BNB for 2009. The competition initiated in commemoration of the 130th anniversary of the BNB, which we will celebrate this year, was announced at the beginning of 2008. Eligible to participate were students pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D degrees in economics, business administration and management, law, and informatics and computer sciences. The deadline for applying was 1 December 2008. After a detailed review of the documents filed, the selection committee found out that 18 students were eligible to take part in the competition, 9 of them studying for a bachelor’s degree and the other 9 for a master’s degree. There were no applicants pursuing a Ph.D. degree for the competition. After the papers of the applicants were reviewed and discussed, the committee for selection and work with students awarded the BNB scholarships selected the following applicants as winners in the 2009 competition. Evelina Mineva Gavrilova – student at the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business management with an essay on “The Role of the Central Bank in the Conditions of Economic Recovery after a Natural Calamity”; Mikhail Staychev Kolev – student at the University of National and World Economy pursuing a bachelor’s degree in finance with an essay on “Monetary Policy and the Speculative Price Bubbles of Certain Assets" Nadezhda Hristova Argirova – student at the University of National and World Economy pursuing a master’s degree in finance with an essay on “The Currency Board in Bulgaria and the Global Financial Crisis: Current Situation, Issues and Possible Solutions” Vanya Stefanova Petrova – student at the University of National and World Economy pursuing a master’s degree in finance with an essay on “A Look at the Past and the Future of Cooperation among Central Banks” The winner bachelor students are granted scholarships of BGN 300, and the master students – BGN 500 per month for a period of 10 months, and for those pursuing a Ph.D. degree the scholarship was BGN 700 per month. There are opportunities for them to be employed by the BNB for a period of time if a suitable vacancy opens. From 2004 to 2008, 95 students and Ph.D candidates took part in the competition, and 13 scholarships were awarded in the same period.
