Ballroom and Latin dancing has been traditionally a latter generations sport. However, around 1000 students from British Universities reguarly compete in the sport termed Dancesport across the Country. On 23rd February 2008 Hermitage Leisure centre, Whitwick will be host to the Northern Universities Dance Championship. A warm up for the Inter varsity dance Championships in March, held in Blackpool, this promises to be an event of high entries and of a very high standard. Teams compete in all five Ballroom and Latin dances throughout the day, culminating in the highly prestigous Northern Team competition in the evening. Such is the spirit of this competition they also have some great fun events such as: ManMan Rumba (A sight to behold!), Girl Girl Samba and the Open 5 party dance! All universities compete mainly to have a great time, although the competitiveness and determination to do well is present in droves. During the evening there is a demo by a top amateur/youth couple. A team of ex students from Warwick University, who are orgainising the event, say they are expecting record numbers of competitors and have chosen Hermitage Leisure Centre for it's reputation on the sequence dance circuit. " It would be great if some of the local people could come down and watch the events" Said Beccy Williams, this year's NUDA president "You never know you may enjoy it that much you want to give it a go yourself!" The competition starts at around 11am with the ballroom section and will finish around 10pm with the team match and results. Spectators will be charged £4.00 entry and can pop in and out as they please!!! So come down and be amazed at the amount of sequins that can be crammed into the Leisure Centre!!!
