BALLROOM OR SOCIAL DANCING
Ballroom Dance is a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed socially and
competitively around the world. Because of its performance and entertainment
aspects, ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed on stage, film, and television.
IMPORTANCE OF BALLROOM OR SOCIAL DANCING
Social Dance is a term for partner-based dance styles. It can also referred to
as Ballroom and Latin Dance or Salsa Dance. However it is called, social
dancing is about partnership, enjoyment, and exercise. Ballroom and Latin
dancing is perhaps the most elegant and well-respected social activity in the
world.
EXAMPLES OF BALLROOM OR SOCIAL DANCING
Foxrtrot
 The most significant development in all the ballroom dancing.
 Combination of quick and slow steps permits more flexibility and gives greater
pleasure than one-step and two-step which it has replaced. There is more variety
to foxtrot than in any other dance.
Cha-Cha
 A very lively, fliratious ballroom dance full of passion and energy.
 The “Classice motion” gives the Cha-Cha unique style.
 Partners work together to synchronize each movement in perfect alignment.
Jive
 A ballroom dance style that originated from United States from AfricanAmericans. Lively form of of Swing dance and a variation of the Jitterbug
Lindy Hop
 Father of all Swing dances
 Known for its unique, athletic style, and often contains aerial jumps, twists, and
flips.
Mambo
 One of the most sensual and emotional Latin American ballroom dances
 Swaying hip movements, facial expressions, arm movements and holes add to
the sensuality of the dance.
Paso doble
 One of the liveliest ballroom dances
 Originates in Southern France
 Modeled after the sound, drama, and movement of Spanish bullfight
Tango
 Like a love in the afternoon-- naughty, but nice in its purest form.
 A sensual coupling forged by raw emotion
Quickstep
 Quick version of the Foxtrot
 Compromised of extremely quick stepping, synchronized feet rhythms, and runs
of quick steps.
 Exciting to watch but among the most difficult of all the ballroom dances.
Line Dancing
 Very easy to learn, mainly because the steps are straightforward, and you do not
have to coordinate your movements with partner
 Involves repetitive series of steps
Rumba
 Grandfather of all the Latin dances.
 Considered by many to be the most romantic and sensual of all Latin ballroom
dances.
Swing
 Characterized by jumps, spins, turns, and throw-outs.
 The Lindy was seen on dance floors all over America
 Now, Lindy has undergone many alterations and has toned down and
incorporated into ballroom format known most commonly as swing
Samba
 Most popular of all Brazilian ballroom dances.
 Popular with young people as well as old generations
 Can be performed solo or with a partner
