The foci of the meeting are the hottest topics of today: the Bátaapáti nuclear repository (opening soon, see the aerial view of the site), the possible revitalisation of the uranium mining, and the planned spent fuel rod repository below an old uranium mine. Co-organizers of the event are the Hungarian Geological Society and the Hungarian Mining and Metallurgical Society. According to the plans, a collection of exploration products and some historic geophysical devices will be on display together with company/commercial presentations. THE VENUE: HOTEL PALATINUS IN PÉCS ASSOCIATION OF HUNGARIAN GEOPHYSICISTS The ‘jewel of the golden age’, Hotel Palatinus, serving as venue of the meeting, is in the prime shopping street in the historic centre facing the main square of Pécs. Its stylish restaurant, grand ballroom and imposing entrance hall (see www.danubiushotels.com/palatinus ) are Art-Nouveau masterpieces. Even in prehistoric times man found shelter and a place to settle in this region. Protected by the Mecsek hill, the Roman settlement of Sopianae had already become a city 2000 years ago. Having some Ottoman relics, it deserves the slogan ‘the city of Mediterranean impressions’. Pécs is the capital of the Baranya county and a region, and will be a Cultural Capital of Europe in 2010 (see en.pecs.hu ). REGISTRATION Registration fees: 45 000 HUF/person (before 15th August), 50 000 HUF (after 15th August), approximately 165 EUR and 180 EUR, respectively. Registration fee includes: publications, lunches, refreshments, interpretation service, the dinner, social meeting, and the Bátaapáti visit (but does not contain accommodation costs).
