Accommodation is provided in dormitories. The Student Union is dedicated to the interest and
needs of all of our students. It provides various services and community programs to integrate
international and Hungarian students. The Study Abroad students live in the same dormitory with
the other international students participating in the Erasmus mobility program. We are happy to
welcome 200-250 Erasmus students a year from all over Europe. The university offers a large
variety of sports and recreation activities as well for the students.
The University of Pécs : The University of Pécs is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It
was founded in 1367 by the Anjou king, Louis The Great. It is a university with an exceptionally
wide experience in higher education. Our university is now the largest university in Hungary,
partially due to the high level of education and information exchange we have been able to
provide to our students and also because of the student number of 35.000. At this place let me
call your attention to the fact that schooling in Hungary has been recognized as one of the best
and most outstanding education in the world. We launched our first diploma program for
international students in English 23 years ago. This year we have altogether 1000 international
students from all over the world.
Schedule of the academic year:
Fall semester:
Study period: from the first week of September until the middle of December
Exam period: from the middle of December until the end of January
Study break: the week of 23 October
Spring semester:
Study period: from the first week of February until the middle of May
Exam period: from the middle of May until the end of June
Study break: the week of Easter Holiday
We launched our first Study Abroad program in 2006 when we received 16 students from the
University of Arizona, Tucson. Interviews with professors and students who participated in the
program indicated widespread satisfaction with the topics covered and the broad analytical
approach used in examining Central European issues as well. We are determined to continue
the high quality education and high level of issue examination the reputation of our university
demands.
Some information about the city :
Pécs is the fifth largest city in Hungary with a population of about 180,000, it lies in South
Transdanubia, close to the border with Croatia. It has a mild, almost Mediterranean climate and
its history goes back over 2,000 years to the Roman times. The downtown of Pécs is a unique
mixture of the relics of Early Christianity (part of the World Heritage), the arrival of the
Hungarians, the Turkish reign and the achievements of modern architecture and art.
Pécs has received the prestigious title ‘The European Capital of Culture’ for the year 2010.
Pécs is a university city. It is full of bars, restaurants and cafés; it has an incredibly vivid student
life day and night.
Please allow me to quote one of our Study Abroad students from the University of Arizona:
‘ I would advise people on coming to Hungary to have a cultural experience like no other
and unparalleled by those in the U.S. Hungary has so much to offer and is a unique and
enriching country. Hungary is in the center of Eastern Europe, making travel to nearby
countries easy and affordable.
Pécs is such a great city to study in and perfect for any college student looking to study
abroad. The city is not only beautiful but historically and culturally rich as well. The city
feels like home the moment you arrive and the people continue to welcome you
throughout your time there. The culture and beauty of Pécs is unlike any other city and
takes enrichment out of the classroom and into your everyday life. You feel as though
Pécs is your home from the moment you arrive and makes it hard to leave.
University of Pécs is not only a beautiful campus and university but offers so much to its
students and makes it easy to get the most possible out of your education. Professors are
always willing to help and try their best to help, make your studies interesting and an
overall enriching experience. University of Pécs helps to make your education and stay in
Hungary an experience unlike any other.’ (Stephanie Nissen)
