POSITION TITLE: Research Director
SUPERVISOR: Executive Director
LOCATION: The position will be based in the Geopolis Geoscience Center in Val-d’Or, Québec.
SALARY/ BENEFITS: Salary, vacation, health and retirement benefits commensurate with experience.

The ILMG is a not-for-profit research and education corporation in Val-d’Or, Québec. ILMG’s mission is to
enhance understanding and effectiveness of geophysical techniques applied to mineral exploration
through research and education. ILMG facilitates and conducts field research, academic courses, and
experiential learning. ILMG collaborates with its mining exploration members and with geophysical
faculties worldwide to provide problem-oriented interdisciplinary research, monitoring, courses, and
conferences that seek solutions for mineral exploration issues.
JOB DESCRIPTION: RESEARCH DIRECTOR
The Research Director, under the supervision of the Executive Director will be responsible for evaluating,
directing, coordinating, and promoting research projects. The Research Director will be principally
involved in setting research goals, priorities, and objectives for both the near - and long-term. The
Research Director will work with ILMG’s Scientific Committee and Executive Director to identify and
propose research opportunities and evaluate the technical merit of project proposals received from
external sources. The Research Director will work with the Executive Director and ILMG staff to develop
partnerships, funding and resources to accomplish these goals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Research Director will be responsible for developing ILMG’s research program activities and achieving
ILMG’s research goals to develop problem-oriented, interdisciplinary and disciplinary research projects for
mining geophysics. Responsibilities will include the following:










Select and assign scientific staff, ensuring equal employment opportunities.
Coordinate activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the
work of employees.
Evaluate and verify employee performance.
Maintain records, prepare reports, and compose correspondence relative to the work.
Carefully monitor and adhere to the R&D budget and timeframes.
Maintain current collaborative partnerships and foster new partnerships to further the
mission of the organization.
Produce, publish and review research and science-related written and oral materials,
including but not limited to reports, peer-reviewed articles, newsletters, press releases,
posters, and oral presentations to a wide audience.
Host and support visiting geoscientists and students interested in mining geophysics.
Provide content for professional development training and seminars, such as workshops.
Provide research training opportunities for under-graduate students from partner faculties.
Skills and Competencies:
The successful candidate will possess integrity, be a creative team player, and be able to:
 Conduct methodological research starting with the assignment of a project through the various steps
including the reporting of results.
 Review, interpret, analyze, and draw conclusions from scientific data.
 Work independently in developing and accomplishing tasks.
 Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
 Use his/her excellent interpersonal skills to win the confidence of staff as well as research and
funding partners.
 Coordinate and prioritize work in situations where multiple and diverse demands are involved.
 Adapt to a changing environment and evolving list of job duties.
Required Qualifications:
 Education: PhD in a field relevant to ILMG’s program theme of mining geophysics.
 Professional experience: At least ten years of work experience in applied geophysics including
research initiative, program development and project management.
 Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, including public speaking
 French would be an asset.
 Successful grant writing and funding record.
 Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and logistical skills.
 Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-directed, and resourceful with ability to take initiative and
follow through on independent projects.
 Physical ability to occasionally support strenuous field work in remote locations under rigorous
conditions, in adverse weather, and at altitude - and enjoy it because of these same conditions!
