Interviews planned to take place in Supreme Headquarter Allied Powers Europe
(SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium (Early June 2011)
The benefit package includes:
- € 7765.00 monthly salary, tax-free in the host country.
- € 78.90 per day spent in the Theatre
(€ 45.09 Hazard allowance + € 33.81 austere living allowance).
- Installation allowance equal to one-month salary
(50% to be reimbursed if not completing two consecutive years of service).
- Accommodation in the Camp, free of charge.

- Laundry at nominal charge.
- Two days of annual leave per month.
- Start of Tour & End of Tour paid transportation.
- 5 + 2 days “Leave from Theatre” plus reimbursement of ticket
up to € 1.000 for every 6 months spent in the Theatre.
- Medical Insurance from Van Breda International, small fee charged.
PART II – CE DUTIES
Post Context:
The Linguistic Service is responsible for enabling HQ ISAF (Headquarters
International Security Assistance Force) to communicate in the local languages
with authorities and populations in its’ area of operations. For this purpose it
provides translation and interpretation services in those languages.
Reports to:
DOS (Director of Staff).
Principal Duties:

Managerial: Manages the Linguistic Service and ensures that services are of
appropriate quality and are produced in the most cost-effective manner.
Formulates ISAF linguistic policy. Provides budget inputs related to his or her
field of activity. Gives professional advice on linguistic matters to ISAF.
Ensures ISAF linguists receive adequate training on and off the job and that
professional practices and working conditions are adhered to. Tests LCH
(Local Civilian Hire) and ICC (International Civilian Consultant) candidates for
ISAF linguistic posts following SHAPE (Supreme Allied Headquarters Europe)

guidelines. Keeps records of services provided. Liaises with the Coordination
Authority for ACO (Allied Command Operations) Linguistic Services (Head
Linguistic Service SHAPE) as regards recruitment, manning, professional
standards etc. Monitors performance of ISAF linguists. Keeps abreast of
issues related to NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) and ISAF policy.
Extends all above duties to COM KAIA (Commander Kabul International
Airport) and IJC (ISAF Joint Command) by providing and overseeing the
Linguistic Services at North KAIA.
Linguistic: Translates and revises translations from Dari and/or Pashto to
English. Interprets in liaison mode from Dari and/or Pashto to English and
vice versa. Gives editorial assistance in English to authors of texts. Maintains
knowledge of specific and technical fields and related terminology. Devises
terminology to cover new concepts, initiates research in relevant fields.
Supervises the compilation of glossaries for use by all relevant ISAF offices to
promote the use of standardised terminology. Arranges weekly and quarterly
roster for the linguistic service. Provides technical control for all linguists at
HQ ISAF and KAIA/IJC.
Performs other related functions as required.
Additional Duties:

Accompanies, if appropriate, members of HQ ISAF to functions and acts as an
enabler to allow members of HQ ISAF to meet local dignitaries.
Organises recruitment and assessment of the LCH linguists for HQ ISAF and
KAIA/IJC locally.
Organises recruitment and assessment of the ICC linguists for HQ ISAF and
KAIA/IJC at SHAPE.
Organises and oversees training of the linguists within the HQ ISAF and
KAIA/IJC.
The incumbent may be required to perform other such related duties as
directed.
PART III - QUALIFICATIONS
Essential Qualifications:
Professional / Experience:

Five years experience as a professional linguist or equivalent
professional experience
Ability to interpret, translate and revise at the required level of quality.
Experience of management, preferably of supervising and/or training
professional linguists.
Ability to manage an organisation at this level.
Broad and up-to-date knowledge of political, cultural, scientific and technical
matters, especially as related to Afghanistan.

Education / Training:

University-level degree or equivalent in the relevant languages or in another
subject if education accomplished in the mandatory languages, or equivalent
professional and managerial training.

Personal Attributes:

There is a requirement for occasional work under pressure, dealing with
sometimes high workloads and irregular working hours.
He/she must be able to perform occasional travel on temporary duty.
Managerial Responsibilities:

Is responsible for managing all aspects of the work of the Linguistic Service,
welfare and professional development of the linguists within the ISAF HQ.
Professional Contacts:

On an as required basis maintains regular professional contact with HQ ISAF
Branches that affect daily operations at all levels to resolve problems and to
exchange information.
As Head of the Linguistic Services, at all levels, including functions organised by
the command and elements within HQ ISAF as well as dignitaries. For other
functions, with linguistic colleagues and other ISAF elements.
Contribution to the Objectives:

Is an essential link to the mission.
The post holder must be fully aware of the ISAF mission in Afghanistan and be
able to contribute whenever possible to helping ISAF to achieve its’ mission of
peace and security for the people of Afghanistan through the work of the
Linguistic Service.
Work Environment:

Working conditions range from an office environment to sometimes austere
conditions when interpreting.
The Chief Linguistic Service determines the work location as required to meet the
operational requirements and in support of the operation.

The successful applicant is required to be proactive in providing the preemployment documents. These include a full medical pack, with supporting
reports and signed off by your doctor.
In addition, confirmation is required that the candidate has been issued/can obtain
a valid NATO Secret security clearance; this can take some time and should be
initiated as soon as the offer of employment is received.

regular review and therefore job contents, including contract duration and
contractual grade may change during the contractual period.
