Job Description Job Title: Senior Project Manager (Post excavation) Salary: From £31220 to £37686 Hours: 37 hours per week. Flexibility with working hours will be required Location: 1 Bolton House, Northampton Duration: Permanent Responsible to: Director, Northampton Office Responsible for: Project Officers, Supervisors and other staff as appropriate Overall Job Purpose: The primary purpose of this role is twofold: 1 To manage the post excavation analysis and reporting programme in Northampton. To set the standard for our output at all levels and implement forward looking strategies for archaeological publication and archiving in order to meet client and curatorial requirements thereby underpining MOLA’s reputation as a leading commercial archaeological organisation. 2 To support the Director in the operation and development of the business at MOLA Northampton. Working with the others in the Senior Management Team to ensure the implementation of effective business wide strategies Main Job Tasks 1 Managing the preparation of project reports and publications within a timely manner 2 Ensure MOLA Northampton projects comply with all local, regional, national and professional standards 3 Managing and coordinating both in-house and external contributors to post excavation programmes 4 Oversee the management of the drawing office, to ensure output standards and coordinate resourcing with the Project Management team 5 Procure external specialist services as required 6 Provide subject matter expertise in post excavation ‘best practice’, developing new strategies for effective project delivery 7 Ensure quality control of all output through copy editing and proof reading 8 Provide high quality training and advice to staff at all levels in the production of post excavation analysis and report writing Key Result areas: Leadership & People Management 1 To provide effective leadership in key areas of the business as part of the MOLA Northampton Management Team. 2 To provide effective line management to the post excavation team handling issues such as welfare, career development and appraisals 3 To champion and manage the post excavation process through effective liaison with the Deployment Manager, other managers and staff 4 To motivate, inspire and manage multi-disciplinary project teams to carry out thoughtful, focused work to produce high quality reports within agreed timescale and budgets. 5 To develop good working relations with external specialists and support in house artefact/ecofact specialists. 6 To develop and maintain excellent relations with clients, grant awarding organisations, external specialists and local authority curators Financial Results 7 To ensure that all assigned contracts meet target margins and that future work is financially viable New Business 8 To work with the Group Sales and Marketing team to grow the business through the development of new clients and to win profitable contracts. 9 To seek grants and other income sources for synthesises and other non-client funded work. 10 Develop and support innovative product dissemination strategies, in order to ensure that MOLA output is targeted to developing audiences and is as widely available as possible Business Delivery and Financial Management 11 To maintain up to date records in the MOLA Project Finance system for all assigned projects. 12 To review financial management information regarding assigned projects regularly, and actively manage the successful completion of projects in fulfilment of the agreed financial, academic, technical and quality standards. Person Specification CORE REQUIREMENTS Qualifications Essential Desirable Relevant degree or extensive experience in commercial archaeological practice Postgraduate or further educational qualification in a relevant academic subject. MCIfA Full Driving Licence Experience & Knowledge Clear track record in the effective and efficient planning and delivery of archaeological projects, including the management of post excavation programmes. Knowledge of the commercial archaeology market and the pressure of delivering quality products to tight deadlines and budgets. Extensive experience in a management or supervisory role. Experience of costing and bidding for archaeological or similar project work. Experience of using publication software. Considerable evidence of report writing and publication. Skills/Abilities/ Competencies Demonstrable ability to edit other peoples reports. Knowledge of other forms of communication including social media. Knowledge of common software packages used in preparation of reports and illustrations. Demonstrable experience of building strong commercial relationships Broad knowledge of British archaeology across a range of periods and type sites. Awareness of current professional guidance and specialist literature relating to the historic environment. Demonstrable commitment to the commercial success of MOLA. Academic publication background Excellent planning and organising management skills. Excellent prioritisation skills An effective, concise, and confident written and verbal communicator. Detailed knowledge in an archaeological specialism such as a specific period or site type; or artefact/ecofact; or use of technology. Engagement with the wider profession such as conference papers, lectures etc CORE REQUIREMENTS Essential Excellent people skills and an ability to motivate staff. Specifically the ability to mentor authors to raise the quality of reports. Excellent numerical ability. Positive attitude, flexible, change orientated and outputs/results focussed.
