These are course choices available as of January 1, 2014. These classes will only be placed on the master schedule if enough students enroll. Classes listed on this sheet are
not a certainty. In addition, the final course offerings for the 2014-2015 school year are projected based on our current staffing and budget. Changes based on the actual
2014-2015 school budget could impact final course offerings. A reminder – you are selecting a course – not a teacher. Select the class that you want – not the teacher. If
we have multiple teachers teaching the same class, students will not have a choice as to which teacher they prefer. We will not make schedule changes because you did not
get the teacher you wanted. In addition, you are selecting a class – not a class period. You will not be able to adjust your schedule due to the period.
Honors vs non-honors classes: Many classes offer both an honors option as well as a regular option. For purposes of scheduling, we are placing our entire student body in
one section – the honors section – if an honors section is available. Students will have four weeks into each semester to make a choice of whether to take the class as a
regular class (based on a 4.0 scale) or as an honors class (based on a 5.2 scale). This will not affect their schedule, as all modifications to content and work load will be
made within the class.
Math questions often arise because students do not often follow the same track. The vast majority of our students will follow this math track: Algebra 1 freshmen year,
Geometry sophomore year, Algebra Advanced II junior year and Pre-Calculus or higher level equivalent math class senior year. If questions arise regarding math selection,
please discuss this with your current math teacher.
All DSA students must log in online, through student portal, between Friday, January 17, 2014 and Friday, February 7, 2014 at 12 noon. Directions for how to enter class
choices were demonstrated to the students at the January 17, 2014 grade level meetings. Students and parents will input class choices. Choices may be amended as many
times as desired from Jan 17 – Feb 7 at noon.
ALL STUDENT USER NAMES AND PASSWORDS were amended on Thursday, January 16 th to ensure that every student could get into the portal. Parent accounts were
not touched.
User name – six digit DPS ID number
Password –8 digit birthday
John Smith born on August 6, 1999 would be 08061999
All students must submit their classes online. No hard copies will be accepted. If a student does not have access to a computer at home, he/she may use a computer in
the counseling center to enter the classes.
Want to be a student assistant for a teacher? Since the master schedule isn’t built yet, you don’t know when you will have an open period. In May 2014 (when you can
make changes) you can add the assistantship. Assistantships in the main office, counseling office and library are full year assistantships. They may not be dropped first or
second semester for any reason.
You do NOT need to sign up for your major classes. We will load them for you.
On Monday, May 12th, all students will receive a hard copy of their 2014-2015 schedule.
Changes may be made from May 12, 2014-May 30, 2014 at noon.
No level changes/teacher changes/period changes/additions will be honored during the 14/15 school year.
All changes must be complete by Friday, May 30th at noon.
Students may only DROP classes in the fall. No classes may be ADDED. All students must have at least 6 classes in the fall.

ACT
All juniors will be placed in an ACT class second semester. This will NOT be part of
your schedule. Instead, it will be an ALT class with no period and no attendance. It
is a 5 credit class. It is worth regular credit – not honors credit. It will be a pass/fail
class. Throughout the year you will be asked to do online and hard copy ACT
practice tests.
Questions?
The best way to contact the counselors is through email. We do not want students
missing class while they wait to speak with their counselor. If you want to speak with
them in person, sign up in the counseling office and go back to class. Counselors will
call students down in the order they signed up.
Don’t know what some of the electives are about?
These were explained at the January 17th class meetings. They can also be found in
the course catalog found on the DSA website:
http://dsapresents.org/counseling/2012-2013-choice-of-studies/
It is always in your best interest to add classes as alternates so that if classes you
wanted first are not available, you have your best shot at getting your second best
option.
Parents/Students
We ask that you be very thoughtful in selecting your courses. Pick the classes YOU
want for next year – not your friends. We build our master schedule according to
what students select in January. If you change classes in May, it will throw off our
master schedule and balance of class loads.
For example, we may have a class of 25 students at the beginning of May. If 10
students decide to drop it for another class, that class goes down to 15 while the class
they move into already had 30 students in it with 40 wanting to be in it. This won’t
be allowed to happen.
So – PLEASE be thoughtful in your class choices. Come May – you may not be able
to switch into another class because it’s full and it’s not the class you wanted during
the Choice window. Please be 100% sure that these are the classes you want next
year.
