JOB SPECIFICATION

The Senior Environment Protection Officer is responsible for ensuring compliance
with the Environment Protection Act and related Policies by:
 the coordination of environmental authorisations for a range of industry sites ,
 the review and assessment of environmental monitoring programs, Environment
Improvement Programmes and development applications, and

 conducting of on-site inspections and investigations.
The Officer is also required to prepare reports and recommendations with respect to
appropriate regulatory action and be involved in the provision of technical advice and
support on environmental issues to other officers within the Environment Protection
Authority, The Minister, industry, government and community.
2. Reporting/Working Relationships (To whom the position reports, staff for
whom the person is responsible, and other significant connections and
working relationships within the organisation).
The Senior Environment Protection Officer reports directly to the Manager, Industry
Services Branch and Team Leader Wastewater and/or Team Leader Industry and is
part of a multi-disciplinary team.

 The EPA is a smoke free work place.
 The EPA is committed to reducing its energy usage and contributing to the State
Government’s greenhouse gas emission targets.
 The incumbent may be required to undertake some out of hours work.
 The incumbent may be required to undertake some intrastate and interstate travel
involving overnight absences.
4. Statement of Key Outcomes/Activities

Contribute to achievement of Regulation & Compliance Division and broader EPA
objectives and priorities by:
 Applying a risk-assessment approach to managing environmental issues;
 Reviewing, assessing and coordinating industry environmental authorisations
(licences, exemptions, works approvals);
 critically assessing and reporting on monitoring programs, management plans
and Environmental Improvement Programs associated with environmental
authorisations;
 critically assessing, reviewing and providing professional advice in relation to
Development Applications of major environmental significance and where
necessary preparing responses, either individually or as a member of a team;
 inspecting industry sites in response to community complaints, targetted audits
or as part of administration of environmental authorisations
 participating in investigations to take evidence, recommend regulatory action
and provide specialist advice for court proceedings;
 Providing professional advice to EPA staff, the Minister, the EPA Board,
Government Agencies, industry and the community in relation to activities of
environmental significance;

 providing assistance to staff in relation to projects and other associated
environmental programs;
 undertaking special projects as directed.
 Assist in the effective use of resources by complying with Government and EPA
systems, policies and procedures.
Contribute to the application of good human resource management practices by:
 Complying with Government and EPA human resource management policies
and procedures and Code of Conduct;
 Complying with the requirements for employees as specified in the EPA
Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare, and Injury Management Roles and
Responsibilities Policy; and

 A relevant Degree in Engineering, Applied Science or Science, or equivalent.

environmental regulation and compliance assessment of industry
 Ability to identify priority issues relating to environmental regulation and initiate
and deliver innovative and cost effective solutions

goals;
 Ability to work as part of a team to identify and critically analyse environmental
problems to develop and recommend strategies to achieve improved
environmental outcomes
 Well developed verbal communication skills, and an understanding of negotiation

 Ability to apply sound writing skills to produce well researched internal and
external documents for a variety of audiences
 Sound interpersonal and personal presentation skills that facilitate interaction,

 Experience in the assessment or control of emissions to the environment
 Experience in working and effectively communicating with a broad range of
individuals and community interest groups from a wide range of backgrounds

Knowledge
 Knowledge of a range of industrial processes and their environmental
management requirements.
 Well developed knowledge and appreciation of environmental management

 Experience in the formulation and implementation of quality systems;
 Experience in the preparation and presentation of verbal addresses in a variety of
forms;

Knowledge
 Knowledge of relevant data management systems;
