Clinical Nursing Simulation Center (CNSC) Preparation Information
Cardiovascular System Assessment Demo
To be scheduled the week from 2/21/11 to 2/25/11
To complete the cardiovascular system assessment demo, you must:
1) View the following videos and CD-ROMS (These videos and CD-ROMS must be viewed in
the CNSC):
 Cardiovascular System: Neck Vessels and Heart (2003) A Visual Guide to Physical

 Cardiovascular System: Peripheral Vascular System (2003) A Visual Guide to Physical
Examination. MedCom Trainex. Cypress, California
2) View the CD-Rom:
 Tissue Perfusion Management: Peripheral Pulse Assessment (2005) Intermediate &
Advanced Nursing Skills. Prentice Hall. Upper Saddle River, New Jersey Tissue
 Perfusion Management: Carotid Artery Assessment (2005) Intermediate & Advanced
Nursing Skills. Prentice Hall. Upper Saddle River, New Jersey
3) Schedule yourself with a classmate to complete the cardiovascular system assessment demo
in the CNSC
 2 students may schedule for each 30 minute session
4) Demonstrate, as observed by the CNSC staff, correct techniques of inspection, palpation,
percussion and auscultation while assessing your classmate for:
 Peripheral pulses
 Carotid bruits
 Normal and abnormal heart sounds
(You will need to access your classmate’s chest to properly complete this demo. Patient
gowns will be provided in the CNSC. Female students will be allowed to wear bras
underneath the patient gown.)
Neurological Assessment Demo
To be scheduled the week from 4/18/11 to 4/29/11
To complete the neurological assessment demo, you must:
1) View the following videos (These videos and must be viewed in the CNSC):
 Neurologic System: Motor System Reflexes (2003) A Visual Guide to Physical

 Neurologic System: Cranial Nerves and Sensory System (2003) A Visual Guide to
Physical Examination. MedCom Trainex. Cypress, California
2) Schedule yourself to complete the neurologic assessment demo in the CNSC
 1 student may schedule for each 15 minute session
3) Demonstrate knowledge of neurological function, as observed by the CNSC staff by:
 explaining and utilizing appropriate techniques for evaluating and documenting a client’s
arousal and awareness
 utilizing the Glasgow Coma Scale to grade a fictitious client’s general neurological status
 showing proper technique for assessing your classmate’s cranial nerve function
 explaining and utilizing appropriate techniques for evaluating and documenting your
classmate’s motor strength for all four extremities
 explaining and utilizing appropriate techniques for evaluating and documenting your
classmate’s pupils (must use PERRLA mnemonic)
 explaining and utilizing appropriate techniques for evaluating and documenting nuchal
rigidity
Respiratory System Assessment and Care Simulation
To be scheduled the week from 3/21/11 to 3/25/11
To complete the respiratory system assessment and care simulation, you must:
1) View the following videos and CD-ROMS:

i) Go to the above URL.
ii) Choose “Interactive Training” from the top menu bar
iii) Watch Chest Drainage Chapters 1-4
iv) Watch Managing Chest Drainage Parts 1-6
2) Come to the CNSC and view the following videos and CD-ROMS (These videos and CDROMS must be viewed in the CNSC):
 Thorax and Lungs (2003) A Visual Guide to Physical Examination. MedCom Trainex.

3) Schedule yourself with a classmate to complete the respiratory system assessment and care
simulation in the CNSC
 2 students may schedule for each 60 minute session
4) Demonstrate to and discuss with CNSC staff correct techniques of inspection, palpation,
percussion and auscultation while assessing for:
 Thoracic symmetry
 Tactile fremitis
 Abnormal lung sounds
5) Demonstrate to and discuss with CNSC staff, correct techniques for:
 Suctioning a client with a tracheostomy tube
 Cleaning a tracheostomy site and cannula
 Changing tracheostomy ties
 Use of an bag valve mask
6) Demonstrate knowledge of closed chest drainage to CNSC staff by setting up a drainage
system and discussing proper function and trouble-shooting strategies for improper function.
