Fall Semester
Clinical Nursing Simulation Center (CNSC) Information
Skills Demonstration Days will be held on Tuesday, August 31st at 9 a.m. for the
Tuesday/Thursday day shift clinical, Tuesday, August 31st at 3 p.m. for the Tuesday/Thursday
evening shift clinical, and on Wednesday, September 1st at 9 a.m. for the Wednesday/Friday day
shift clinical. Please see Mrs. Susan Malkemes, Level III Coordinator, for your individual
expected arrival time.
To successfully complete the skills demonstrations, you must report to the CNSC at your
designated time and be prepared to demonstrate competency in the following clinical skills:
Intramuscular and Subcutaneous Injections
Primary and Secondary Intravenous Medication Administration
Urinary Catheterization
Injections
To prepare for giving injections, you must:
1) Review and complete self-evaluation:
 Pickar, Gloria (2008) Section 3: Chapter 10, 11 & 12, 13 & 14 Dosage Calculations 8th
ed. Clifton Park, New York, pp. 169-340
2) View the CD-Rom:
 Taylor’s Video Guide to Clinical Nursing Skills Student Set on CD-ROM: Module 4:
Injectable Medications
3) Demonstrate your application of knowledge of parenteral drug administration to your clinical
instructor by:
 correctly performing dosage calculations to convert have to desired dosage
 properly withdrawing medications from a vial and ampule
 using correct technique to mix medications from two vials
 locating correct subcutaneous and intramuscular injection sites
 using proper technique to administer a subcutaneous and intramuscular medication to a
simulation manikin and/or injection pad
Primary & Secondary Intravenous Medication Administration
To prepare for administering intravenous fluids and medications, you must:
1) Review and complete self-evaluation:

i) Module 5: Intravenous Medications
ii) Module 16: Intravenous Therapy
2) Demonstrate your application of knowledge of primary and secondary IV therapy to your
clinical instructor by:
 Correctly calculating and regulating a primary IV drip rate
 Choosing and employing correct interventions for administration of secondary IV
medications using a simulation manikin.
Urinary Catheterization Demo
To prepare for inserting a urinary catheter, you must:

2) Demonstrate knowledge of urinary catheterization, as observed by your clinical instructor by:
 Properly setting up a sterile field and donning sterile gloves
 correctly inserting a catheter in a simulation manikin without contaminating self, catheter
or field
 correctly answering questions about care of the patient with a urinary catheter
After successfully completing your skills demonstration day, you will begin your assigned
clinical rotation. Throughout this rotation, you will continue to learn new skills. Prior to
performing these skills on patients in the clinical setting, you are required to demonstrate
proficiency with each skill by successfully completing skill demonstrations and clinical
simulations in the CNSC. The following skill demonstrations and clinical simulation will be
completed during your NSG240 clinical rotation. These skill demonstrations and clinical
simulation must be scheduled on your own time. They are not included in your skills
demonstration day or your clinical rotation. To schedule these CNSC experiences, please

Breast & Testicular Exam
Due October 1, 2010
To complete the breast and testicular exam skills demonstration, you must:
1) Come to the CNSC and view the CD-Rom:
 Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Peripheral Vascular, Breasts: Breasts and Regional
Lymphatics (2005) Physical & Health Assessment. Prentice Hall. Upper Saddle River,
New Jersey
 Genitalia, Rectal, Head-to-Toe Exam: Breasts Female Genitalia & Male Genitalia (2005)

2) Schedule yourself for a 20 minute session in the CNSC
3) Complete a quiz to reflect your knowledge of breast and testicular exam. You must score a
70 or higher on this quiz to proceed to skills demonstration
4) Demonstrate proper procedures for performing a breast exam on a model breast, as observed
by the CNSC staff.
5) Demonstrate proper procedures for performing a testicular exam on a model scrotum, as
observed by the CNSC staff.
Central Venous Access Devices Demo
Due November 5, 2010
To complete the central venous access device demo, you must:
1) View the CD-Rom:

2) Attend 60 minute CVAD tutoring session in the CNSC (contact the CNSC for scheduled
tutoring session times)
3) Demonstrate to and discuss with CNSC staff:
 Types of CVADs and the care each
 Proper procedure for changing a CVAD dressing
 Correct methods for obtaining a blood sample from a CVAD
 Correct technique for accessing a Portacath
 Proper procedures for administering IV medications through a CVAD

To complete the clinical simulation, you must:

3) Schedule yourself for a 30 minute session in the CNSC
4) In the clinical simulation you will:
 Demonstrate correct assessment techniques in evaluation of the abdomen
 Properly insert and maintain a nasogastric tube, as observed by CNSC staff, using a
simulation manikin.
 Discuss nursing care of the patient with a nasogastric tube with the CNSC staff
 Use appropriate language in conversing with your simulated patient
 Maintain a safe environment for your simulated patient
