Nursing 230: Nursing Care of the Child-Rearing Family
Clinical Nursing Simulation Center (CNSC) Information
As part of your clinical experience, you will you will participate in scheduled clinical simulations in
the CNSC. (Please schedule your time by calling Kim Hearst at 408-4089.) These clinical simulations
will be based on information learned in the classroom, required preparatory work, and clinical
experiences.
Required preparatory work:
1) Pickar, Gloria (2008) Chapter 14. Dosage Calculations 8th ed. Thomson: Delmar Learning,
Clifton Park, New York
2) Pickar, Gloria (2008) Chapter 16. Dosage Calculations 8th ed. Thomson: Delmar Learning,
Clifton Park, New York
3) Calculating Pediatric Dosages Packet. (Obtain this packet from Kim Hearst in the CNSC).
4) Taylor’s Video Guide to Clinical Nursing Skills CD-ROM set:
a) Modules 3: Oral and Topical Medications
b) Module 4: & Injectable medications
5) Prentice Hall Real Nursing Skills: Pediatric Nursing Skills CD-ROM: Assessment Module. (This
must be viewed in the CNSC.
Clinical Simulations:
Pediatric Medication Administration
Week Three
To demonstrate competency in clinical judgment, you must:
1) Accurately calculate pediatric dosages.
2) Administer oral and rectal medications to a simulation manikin.
3) Administer an intramuscular injection to a simulation manikin.
Pediatric Physical Assessment
Week Eleven
To demonstrate competency in clinical judgment, you must:
1) State normal parameters for measurements and vital signs in selected pediatric age groups.
2) Properly performs assessment techniques for each body system relative to selected pediatric
age group
