Stanley Picker Internship Fixed-term position (6 months, April 2011 to September 2011) 2 days per week Bursary of £2,000 JOB DESCRIPTION Overview: Matt’s Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Mile End funded by Arts Council England and other major trusts and foundations. Matt's Gallery provides artists with the space and time to take risks, test their limits and surprise even their own intentions. After three successful years of the Stanley Picker Internship bursary we are offering a further 6-month paid internship commencing in April 2011. This is an opportunity for a recent graduate or postgraduate to gain valuable experience working as part of a gallery team. The internship is offered on a part-time basis for 6 months (two days per week). A bursary of £2,000 will be paid over the course of the internship. Applicants should have a strong desire to learn and develop within a professional gallery environment and will be required to demonstrate knowledge of the visual arts and an aptitude for research, as well as good administrative, communication and organisational skills. JOB DESCRIPTION cont First phase: The first two months of the programme will introduce a broad range of administrative tasks within the gallery, allowing the intern to become familiar with the gallery’s staff and operations. This will involve working closely with the director and gallery managers on a range of projects including publications, exhibitions, education, fundraising and general gallery management. General duties will include: General administrative duties including answering telephone calls and emails and fielding enquiries as necessary; maintaining a centralised filing system for the director and gallery managers; maintaining and updating the gallery mailing list Shadowing the director and staff in artist’s meetings, studio visits, external meetings and seminars Front of house activities including invigilation, greeting visitors and book sales Preparing material for press, funders and other external agencies Review and second phase: At the end of the first phase there will be a review with the Director and Gallery Manager. This discussion will look at progress to date and establish the intern’s area of focus for the remainder of the internship. A plan of work for the remaining four months of the internship will be agreed with the gallery director and managers. At the end of the six-month period, interns will have obtained a good working knowledge of the gallery structure and gained practical skills in gallery management.
