People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the key events which led to the Colonial wars of the 19 th Century; describe the Colonial wars of the 19th Century; and describe in detail one of the wars between Māori and Pākehā which took place during the 19th Century.

Explanatory notes
1 Local iwi or hapu curriculum aims and objectives take precedence with this unit standard.
2 The context of the inquiries required should begin with the local rohe or takiwa.
Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of other iwi or hapu, the tangata whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence. Other iwi or hapu views should be encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori kaupapa, tikanga and take.

Definitions of local Māori words and concepts in the local dialect must be verified by the local iwi and or hapu concerned.

Describe the key events which led to the Colonial wars of the 19 th Century.
Evidence requirements
1.1 The description details the initial settlement by British settlers and subsequent demand for land.
1.2 The description details the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the
Treaty of Waitangi in the context of the Colonial wars.
1.3 The description details of British efforts to impose sovereignty over Aotearoa.
1.4 The description details the introduction of ordinances and legislation which led to forced confrontation with some M āori, iwi and hapū.
Outcome 2
Describe the Colonial wars of the 19th Century.
Evidence requirements
The explanation details wars which broke out prior to the 1860s. 2.1
2.2 The explanation details the major wars of the 1860s, which provided the turning point for Pākehā rule.
Range wars can include but are not limited to - Waikato; Taranaki;
Tauranga.
2.3 The description details the outcomes of war for the parties involved.
Range outcomes can include but are not limited to - numbers killed; amount of land settled and alienated; relationships between parties.
