Local iwi or hapū curriculum aims and objectives take precedence with this unit
standard.

The context of the inquiries are limited to the local rohe or takiwā. Where local rohe
are also occupied by a number of other iwi or hapū, the tangata whenua or mana
whenua view will take precedence. Other iwi or hapū views should be encouraged in
order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori kaupapa, tikanga and take.

by the local iwi and/or hapū concerned.

Pūrākau are accounts or stories associated with the gods and demigods, as opposed
to pakiwaitara which are accounts associated with humankind. The Māori
perspective is that these accounts are of actual events. Often akin to accounts from
the bible in nature, they have been labelled myths, stories and legends by many nonMāori historians. However, the traditional and widely held view of Māori is that these
accounts provide a historical continuum and are an integral part of a tribe’s history.
