Purpose of the post

The post involves the design and implementation of data mining software systems to support real-time environmental sensor Grids under the supervision of Prof Yike Guo. The MESSAGE project, which started in 2006, is led by Imperial College, and comprises a consortium of partners drawn from the Universities of Cambridge, Southampton, Newcastle and Leeds who will work closely with one another and with a number of major industrial partners and transport authorities. The Research Assistant will be a member of the Quantitative Analysis and Decision Science Group (QUADS) within the

Department of Computing.

Key Responsibilities:

To plan and carry out research in accordance with the project aims and objectives as directed by Professor Guo.

To identify areas where distributed and mobile data mining can be implemented.

To research the development and application of distributed data mining systems within mobile sensor grid.

To attend all project and related research group meetings.

To report and present research findings to colleagues (internally and externally) through large conference talks and publication.

To liaise with developers of the sensor systems and analyse software to design and implement distributed data mining tools.

To help with teaching, tutorials and coursework marking within the

Department, as requested, as well as helping with the supervision of student projects.

To comply with relevant College policies, including Financial

All research staff may be expected to undertake certain teaching duties without additional payment, subject to any limitations prescribed by the terms of the grant or contract under with they are employed.

Person Specification

Applicants are required to demonstrate that they possess the following attributes:

Knowledge and Experience:

Experience in the implementation of software tools for real time data analysis methods and algorithms in a communicating sensor system.

Experience in conducting application case studies for data analysis.

Experience in integration of the software tools within the wider software system already implemented.

Experience in writing and publishing academic research papers describing and evaluating the software system developed.

Programming experience in Java.

Software experience in engineering methods to ensure delivery of high quality functional software systems.

Skills and Abilities

Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature.

Ability to develop and apply new concepts.

Creative approach to problem-solving.

Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to relate to and deal with a wide range of people including other researchers and students in an academic context.

Ability to work within a collaborative team.

Ability to coherently present technical work in English at conferences and seminars.

Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write technical reports clearly and succinctly for publication.

Ability to organise and prioritise own work in response to deadlines.

Qualifications

Essential:

A good BSc degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or

Electronics/Electrical Engineering.

Desirable:

A Masters Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or

Electronics/Electrical Engineering.
