Photography 2 Syllabus Course Description THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO BUILD UPON THE STUDENT’S PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS STARTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY 1. STUDENTS WILL STUDY AN ARTIST, A SERIES OF PHOTOGRAPHS, AND VARIOUS STYLES IN ORDER BUILD UPON AND EVENTUALLY GAIN THEIR OWN STYLE. THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED WITH SPECIFIC PROJECTS UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF THE TEACHER. THEY ARE DESIGNED TO HELP THE STUDENT BECOME SELF-DRIVEN. EACH STUDENT WILL DEVELOP A PORTFOLIO. ALL ARTWORK IS PROPERTY OF MONA SHORES HIGH SCHOOL. STUDENTS MUST PAY FOR TAKE HOME PROJECTS, BASED ON THE SUPPLIES USED. YOU WILL STUDY HOW THE ART AND THE ARTIST WORKED WITHIN A PARTICULAR CULTURE AND HISTORY OF THE TIME. YOU WILL REFINE YOUR SKILLS IN CRITIQUING PHOTOGRAPHY. YOU WILL USE THE ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF ART TO CREATE MORE EFFECTIVE PHOTOGRAPHY. YOU WILL CREATE A PORTFOLIO OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY. YOU WILL CREATE A PERSONAL ARTIST STATEMENT. YOU WILL BUILD CREATIVE THINKING SKILLS. YOU WILL CREATE PHOTOGRAPHY THAT HAS BOTH MEANING AND PURPOSE. Course Procedures and Policies GRADES WILL BE EARNED ON A POINT SYSTEM. EACH PROJECT, JOURNAL AND WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT AND PARTICIPATION WILL HAVE A POINT VALUE. YOUR GRADE WILL BE DETERMINED BY DIVIDING THE AMOUNT OF POINTS EARNED BY THE AMOUNT OF POINTS POSSIBLE FOR EACH PROJECT. Grading Scale 100% - 93% A 92% - 90% A89% - 87% B+ 86% - 83% B 82% - 80% B79% - 77% C+ 76% - 73% C 72% - 70% C69% - 66% D+ 65% - 60% D 59% AND BELOW IS AN F Categories PHOTO PROJECTS 60% JOURNALS 10% WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS/REPORTS 20% PARTICIPATION 10% final exam is 20 % overall grade includes written, portfolio and project Homework 1. STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN SOME TIME IN CLASS TO RESEARCH BOTH THEIR PHOTOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH IN CLASS. 2. JOURNALS ARE TO BE COMPLETED AT HOME AND TURNED IN ON THE DAY DUE, IN ORDER TO MAXIMIZE CLASS STUDIO TIME. 3. STUDENTS MUST UTILIZE THEIR STUDIO TIME TO DEVELOPING FILM, PRINTING PHOTOGRAPHS, AND COMPLETING THE FINISHED PROJECT, ALONG WITH THEIR WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS IF TIME ALLOWS. Written Assignments 1. Students may have in class reading to complete and answer questions for understanding. 2. weekly journals. 3. Artist statements will accompany each photography project turned in. Report 1. Students will complete a report and a poster based on photographic technology. Photography Projects 1. Each photo project will have a time line and due date to follow. 2. Failure to complete and turn in project will result in a lower grade. 3. For each day past the due date set, the project looses 5 points 4. One week past the due date, the project is recorded as a zero until turned in 5. Students must use class time to work on current projects, and then may make arrangements to complete late or missing work. 6. All projects must be completed and turned in, regardless of due date, by the last week of the semester. 7. Projects will be accompanied by a grading sheet and an artist statement, and any other requirements to be considered for grading. Participation 1. Students are expected to come to class prepared with the necessary tools and equipment to work. 2. Students are expected to work on photography related material at all times. 3. Students are expected to participate in group learning situations, demonstrations, and critiques. 4. Students not working in a manner conducive to photography will be docked points for participation, resulting in a lower grade for this category. WEEKLY JOURNAL REQUIRMENTS: Due every Wednesday. These journals are homework. Every week you will find in you local newspaper, not on-line, 2 photographs. One of the photographs will be aesthetic, and the other will be journalistic. You will attach these to line paper and complete the following: Explain the point of interest for the aesthetic image Describe the emotional response for the journalistic Describe the depth of field for each Describe the rule of thirds for each PORTFOLIO You will be required to keep a copy or the matted photograph of what you consider your best work. You will need to have 5 strong pieces in your portfolio, along with written artists statements for each work included. The artist statement will include information on your motivation, your goal, your choice of subject matter you used and why, how you composed it in the picture plane, and discuss any special decisions you made to enhance your photograph.
