MATCH SECRETARY’S REPORT TO THE 26TH A.G.M.
OF THE STOKENHAM SHORT MAT BOWLING CLUB
WEDNESDAY 29TH APRIL 2015.
Mr. Chairman, fellow bowlers,
Yes, another year has passed by since we were arranging a programme of summer
friendlies including of course the Stokenham / Slapton Summer Challenge series the
result of which I am sorry to say resulted in us just failing to retain the trophy. During
the course of that lovely summer weather we also played home and away against
Sherford, and Stoke Fleming, winning some losing some, but again enjoying them all.
Before we knew it the nights were drawing in and it was time to arrange the
league matches for Stokers still in division 2 and Hammers in division 3. After every
thing was sorted and with the first matches imminent the West Alvington club folded
and division 3 was reduced to only six teams requiring a little reorganisation. From
the start Hammers struggled to field a team and were only saved by being able to
recruit Alan, Chris and Cis from the closed West Alvington club. In the event both
teams performed well, Stokers to win division 2 and Hamers finishing a worthy third.
In the league KO we went out in the first round but managed to survive the first round
of the “Tens” to then lose to Slapton in the semi-final.
At home the Lavis Cup and in house competitions attracted fewer entrants.
Except for the club singles all were run as round robins the winners of which being
justly rewarded at the annual dinner last week. Unfortunately only 6 of our 16 ladies
entered the ladies singles, which also suffered various mishaps to the extent that for
this season it was decided to cancel the event.
During the season we played an opening bowls drive and a further four drives
the snowball being won by Dave Aldworth with 75 shots. Winning also the club pairs
and fours, Dave who modified his style must surely be our most improved player of
the year. All in all and in addition to the Lavis Cup there were 57 entries for the
competitions 15 down on last year.
.
To sum up, we organised and played 24 league matches, 1 KO match, 4 Tens
KO matches, 5 Bowls Drives, 10 friendly matches, the club championships and the
Lavis Cup. All of which keeps your match and competition secretary pretty busy. I
trust you enjoyed it all.
Thank you everyone for your support
S.A.GREENING-APRIL 2014.
