SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD 16th MAY 2010
Dear Parishioners,
‘Christ ascends to His Father! Christ’s ascension is our guarantee that one day we
shall be with Him in heaven to praise the glory of God our Father. The Ascension is
our hop of the great inheritance which awaits those of us who believe in the power of
the risen Christ.’(Pope John Sunday Missal. Introduction to The Ascension).
Today is also World Communications Day; a day when we pray for the work of
communications professionals across the world. The Catholic Communications
Network (CCN) provides support for the Church in promoting the Gospel in the
media. The CNN depends on your generosity. There will be a second collection to
support its work. This Sunday afternoon we are holding a Rosary Rally and hope that
you will be able to come along to support it. The Rally begins with Holy Hour at 2pm.
Mass at 3pm. followed by a May Procession. We would particularly welcome the
children of the Parish, especially those making their First Holy Communion, to the
May Procession. Please try to be present. We welcome in to the family of the Church
those who are to be baptised this weekend-babies Henry John Holmes and Eoin
Patrick O’Sullivan. We look forward to Father Sean’s Diamond Jubilee on Thursday
27th May. Bishop Philip will be the leading celebrant and will be joined by Father
Sean’s Priest friends, family, former Parishioners and yourselves. The Dominion Car
Park will be open. Would those of you who have kindly offered to help by providing
refreshments please bring them to the Presbytery or Sacristy or Hall at your
convenience. Your prayers are asked for Jason Wandless and Lidia Scannaliato who
are to be married here at St Augustine’s on Friday 28th May at 1.15pm; also for
Richard Cattell and Mary Donnelly who are to be married on 19th June.
Next weekend we will be having a special collection to help cover the costs of the
Pope’s visit to England. Please be as generous as possible. The target for the
Birmingham Archdiocese to reach is £80,000 and the average amount raised in the
Diocese for second collections is between £40,000-£50,000 . So if you give twice what
you normally give to a second collection we should reach our target. Please see inside
Newsletter for arrangement for the Pope’s visit.

Ascension Day Sunday 16th May
Ascension Prayer to Live a Full Life
O Lord,
Your Ascension into heaven
marks the culmination of the Paschal Mystery,
and it contains an important teaching for us.
May we live life as an earthly reality
and develop our human potential to the fullest.
May we make use of the results of science
to achieve a better life on this planet.
But in our best moments, we know that there must be
more
than all of this, a supreme Reality. As Christians, we know
that this Reality is Your loving Father who awaits us with
You and the Holy Spirit.
Where You have gone,
we ultimately will come - if we are faithful.
Communications Sunday Prayer
O God, Whose word is truth and in whose light
we see light,
Guide those who tell the story
Of our times through word and image.
Make them seekers after truth
In addition, advocates of human dignity.
Grant discernment to all
Who rely on their labours,
And, as we confront the pain
And promise of this world,
Awaken in us a sense of wonder
At your presence and of longing for your peace.
Please pray for: Betty Hird who died recently; also Daniel Leech (Requiem Mass Wednesday 19 th
May at 12.00 Noon. Reception into Church 4.30pm Tuesday) Also Maureen Walter, Eddie Kubic,
Johanna O’Connell and Pauline Harris whose anniversaries are at this time.
