Policy QIMMI04008.05 Page 1 of 2 Department of Microbiology Quality Manual Section: LIS Downtime and System Maintenance Prepared by: LIS Committee Issued by: Laboratory Information System Approved by: Laboratory Director Subject Title: System and Hardware Overview Original Date: October 22, 2008 Revision Date: October 31, 2008 Annual Review Date: May 31, 2013 Principle/Purpose: To describe LIS system(s) modules and hardware. The laboratory information system (LIS) is an integrated information system comprised of the following components: 1. LIS purchased from Soft Computer Consultants Inc. (SCC) for Blood Transfusion, Biochemistry, Hematopathology, Anatomical Pathology, Microbiology, Cytogenetics and Molecular. 2. Cytovision, purchased from Applied Imaging, is an image analysis system used by Cytogenetics to pair and study chromosomes. 3. Prenatal Risk Assessment (PRA), purchased from Benetech. 4. A network of Hospital template personal computers (PC) which require administrator level access to add or remove software. 5. The LIS is available to authorized users on PCs in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Microbiology through a local area network (ETHERNET network). 6. The system is used to generate, transmit and manage laboratory results entered manually or through standard (ASTM or HL7) interfaces with automated analytical instruments. 7. The system is interfaced to Hospital information systems and other Laboratory Information systems for result reporting and order entry purposes. All such interfaces use HL7 standard protocols and pass through an intermediary interface engine. 8. The Mount Sinai Hospital network is a TCP/IP network consisting of gigabit capable Nortel and Cisco switches connected to a fibre backbone. There is also a wireless network infrastructure which is 802.11b consisting of Nortel and Cisco equipment. Network servers include the Unix-based LIS servers as well as several Windows 2000 servers and a few Windows NT servers configured in a domain. All PC workstations are members of the domain. Serial devices such as label printers and analytic instruments located in laboratory areas are connected to Xyplex terminal servers that in turn are attached to the hospital network. 9. The LIS system Hardware consists of a two servers that provide mirrored data for maximum robustness. This configuration minimizes the potential for data loss. Both servers are IBM P7 model 8233-E8B Server 2: System p 750 power stations. Data for SoftLab and SoftMic between 1995 and 2000 is stored on the main server in a separate database under the logins “alab” and “amic”. SoftBank and SoftPath results are contained in their entirety on the main server. For ease of management, security and support the LIS hardware is located in the HP Markham Data Center.
