Goal & Objective: To think about personal goals and dreams Instructional Objective: Students will have to observe Veronica Wilson’s work and discuss what they see. Students will then have to write about their goals and dreams and why they want to accomplish them. Skills: Cognitive skills by processing and connecting new information with personal information, speech Vocabulary skills: goals, dreams, achievement, education, education gap, system, support, mentor, success, Materials: pen, pencil and paper Procedure: Introduce students to the Bermuda National Gallery and to the exhibition “Eyes on the World”. Seat students in front of Veronica Wilson’s work. Discuss with students what they see. What is the story they see? Who are the individuals they see? Encourage students to use variety of descriptive words in describing what they see. Introduce Miguel Quevedo. Ask students to imagine what the goals and dreams might be for Miguel Quevedo and the things that might be a barrier for him achieving his goals and dreams. Let students think about their own personal goals and dreams. Students will then have to write about their goals and dreams and why they want to accomplish them. Adaptation: Brainstorming together. On two boards or large paper, have students brain storm ideas with what could help students achieve goals and what could be barriers. Extension: Teachers can submit write-ups to the BNG where it will be published onto the BNG Blog. Goal & Objective: To reflect/interpret and write about a photograph in the exhibition using a writing style. Instructional Objective: Students will be introduced to the current BNG exhibition where they will explore the various social themes and then select a photo to write about. Students will have to use one of the writing styles discussed: persuasive, descriptive, controversial, informative, critical, and comparative. Skills: effective writing, reading, critical rendering and analysis of images, Vocabulary skills: Equality, social issues, human rights, justice, amnesty, protection, security, basic rights, school system, performance, poverty, goals, dreams, achievement, education gap, support, mentor, success, Materials: paper, pen, visual aids, writing board, handouts on different writing styles Procedure: Introduce students to the Bermuda National Gallery and to the exhibition “Eyes on the World”. Encourage students to use variety of descriptive words in describing what they see. The BNG encourages visual literacy where students are to unpack the story of the photo/theme by being, observant, analytical and critical. Different writing styles will then be discussed among students. Explanation of each writing style with examples will be given (persuasive, descriptive, controversial, informative, critical, and comparative). Students are then to choose one writing style to focus on and write about one of Veronica Wilson’s photos. Adaptation: Open discussion on the social theme. Extension: Teachers are invited to submit student write-ups to the BNG where the gallery will publish them onto the BNG Blog. Goal & Objective: To have students be aware of social issues in the BNG exhibition “Eyes on the World” and have them host a critical dialogue through debate Instructional Objective: Using “speech” and “literacy” as pre-requisites, students will be selecting a debate topic from a given list and engage in an actual debate among their peers. Skills: speaking skills, language skills, Vocabulary skills: debate, social issue, critique, argumentative, pros/cons, equality, human rights, affairs, politics, government, ethics, morals, legal/illegal, equality, social issues, human rights, justice, amnesty, protection, security, basic rights, school system, performance, poverty, goals, dreams, achievement, education gap, support, mentor, success, Materials: pen, paper, reference Procedure: Students are to examine the rights of women by engaging in a debate where students must come up with an argument either for/against the topic and how their perspective is for the betterment of the youth in the education system today. Have students select a debate topic from the given list: Bermuda based topics: education system, G.P.A, drop out/graduating rates, peer pressure, poverty, public vs. private, external support/mentors International topics: education, poverty, politics, and human rights After choosing a topic, have the students openly discuss the topic as a class. If time permits and resources are available, have students’ research/study the topic (I.E in the library, computer, text books etc) Divide the class into two groups: one group is “for” and the other group “against”, keeping in mind the argumentative solution is for the “betterment” of society. Speaker: 1 minute for each student. Each student must add new information. Adaptation: Students choose a topic from the debate list and write down their perspective in an essay format. Extension: If the debate occurs at the gallery, the debate will be filmed and published on the BNG Media channel. If the debate in held off-site in the classroom, teachers and students are welcomed to film the debate and submit it to the BNG for publication on the BNG Media.
