BENJAMIN6 SHERMAN
American Lineage: James5, Benjamin4, Thomas3, Peleg2, & Philip1.
Preceding English Lineage: Samuel6E, Henry5R, Henry4E, Thomas3E, John2E, & Thomas1E.

1794. Apr 25th, Benjamin was born near Rome NY Oneida Co (DPS p235; NEHGR CD-ROM
v61p272; <ancestry.com> Gene Pool). Settled in Genesee Co NY and came to Nottawa Prairie MI in

v1924p284; MI Biographies, 1888, p585).
1828/29. In the first settlements of SW MI it was deemed right and proper that the first person who
settled on a piece of land, should be entitled to the right of purchase of it when it came on the market by
the US Land Office. It was held unjust for any person to in any way to interfere with the squatter's right.
In 1928 Mr McMillian had established squatter's rights on the SE 1/4 of Section 4 Nottawa Twp
StJoseph Co. Nevertheless, the next year Benjamin Sherman purchased that property and soon took
procession.
This was against tradition. His doing so was known among all settlers from Niles MI (Cass Co) to
Tecumseh MI (Lenawee Co). A prejudicial feeling was created that prevented Mr Sherman, who was a
man of more than ordinary education and ability, from ever becoming a popular or highly esteemed
citizen of that area.

McMillian, who arrived late in 1824 and lived all winter in their wagons (1827-1877 History of

1831. Abigail Sherman died, 1794-1831, buried in Pioneer Cemetery Nottawa Twp StJoseph Co
(tombstone).
1832. When Sturgis MI was first plotted in StJoseph Co it was in Sherman Twp and therefore named
Sherman; the Twp was named Sherman in 1829 in honor of Colonel Benjamin Sherman. The Sherman
post office was established in 1841, but changed to Sturgis in 1845 (MI Place Names by Romig, p511;
1827-1877 History of StJoseph Co MI, p190/91; The Encyclopedia of Michigan, 1989 p408).
xxxx. Benjamin's experience with a very cold winter when the water that run the local grist mill was
frozen over, and he had to grind his grist by hand (MPHC v5p511 1882)..
1832. Benjamin was Nottawa Twp supervisor, and chairman of the StJoseph County Board (1827-1877
History of StJoseph Co MI, p30,98,99).
