Overview of Language Arts Class
August, 2015
Dear Students and Families,
A new school year has begun. I am so happy that I will be teaching the Language Arts classes here
on Team 8-Black. This year we will read stories, write narrative, informational, argumentative,
poetic, and dramatic pieces, and practice our grammar and punctuation skills. It will be a busy and
productive year during which we will continue to build a strong foundation of language skills in
preparation for success in high school and beyond.
It is very important that students have the materials they need to succeed each day in class.
Students will need to have the following supplies for LA class every day:
 Folder with pockets
 A three subject notebook (preferably with pockets) to be used exclusively in LA
 One pen and pencil
 Loose leaf paper to complete in-class assignments
 An independently selected reading book
 A dictionary (for use at home)
I will be conducting notebook checks frequently, so it is very important that materials are brought to class
each day.
Finally, I believe the key to success is communication. Students, if you are having a problem that
is making it difficult for you to succeed in class, please come and talk to me so that we can solve the
problem together. Parents, please contact me if you have any concerns or questions about this class or
your son or daughter. My e-mail address is: lquashnie@groton.k12.ct.us. I will get back to you as
soon as possible. Also, my homework assignments are posted nightly on my web-page which can be
accessed through the WSMS site. Finally, the Groton School District offers a service to parents via our
“Power School” program called “Parent Portal”. Please contact the office here at West Side if you are
interested in learning more about how you can track the progress of your sons and daughters using this
program.
I know that if we all work together, this will be another wonderful year of learning!
Sincerely,
Ms. Laura Quashnie
Please detach and hand in by the beginning of class on Monday, August 31st.
