HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATIONS 1. The school has a ‘STANDING ORDER OF DRUGS” (SISC FORM 2011- 001) prescribed by the School Medical Officer and approved by the Department of Health/School Health Services which maybe administered to your child for mild ailments such as headache, stomach pain, dizziness, minor cuts and bruises, and in cases of emergencies. For children with chronic illnesses who are on long term medications, medicines along with recent medical report and doctor’s prescription and a signed “CONSENT FOR MEDICATION” can be kept in the clinic which can be administered on emergencies. However no medicine will be given to a child without parent’s prior consent. 2. Only home medications with accompanying medical report, doctor’s prescription and a dully filled up SIS CONSENT FOR MEDICATION FORM (SISC FORM 2011-002). However first dose of prescribed drugs especially antibiotics and other medicines that can trigger allergic reactions will not be given in school. Medicines should be directly handed to the school nurse or to the bus assistant along with the CONSENT FOR MEDICATION FORM if the child avails the school transport. Parent’s are reminded not to give medicines to children or put them in their bags be it a small or grown up child as it poses danger to them, especially small children. The school will not be held responsible for any drug related problem that may happen for medicines that are independently taken by any child in the bus or school premises especially the grown ups. EMERGENCY CASES Emergency cases will be dealt with by the school emergency team according to DHA/SHS GUIDELINES (please refer to our website EMERGENCY CASES). Parents will be immediately contacted by a concerned school authority in the event of any emergency. But in case the school are not able to contact the parents the sick/injured child will be brought to the nearest hospital by ambulance or school transport. However continued effort will be done to contact parents, so it is really important for parents to provide the school an emergency contact number other than their own number, maybe a near relative. Star International School Health and Safety Policy RELEASING CHILDREN DURING/AFTER SCHOOL HOURS A. Sick Child Any sick or ill looking child will be sent home especially those children with temperature of 38C and above. An ill looking child may harbor an infection which maybe communicable. So parents are strictly requested not to send any sick child to school, so as not to put your child and other children at risk of cross infection. A sick child has a lowered immune system and sending him to school makes him more vulnerable to other undetected infections from the school environment or from other children that may aggravate his condition. A child found/suspected with a communicable disease such as chickenpox, measles etc. (DHA GUIDELINE: Exclusion From School for Children with Communicable Diseases) will be immediately sent home and will be required to bring a medical clearance once he/she rejoins school. Let us be vigilant on the health of each child by not spreading the infection, as to much quality learning time is lost from schoolchildren due to absences from illness which can be prevented if we just keep a sick child at home. B. As Per Parent’s Request Except for the school’s decision to release a child due to medical reasons or unruly behaviour, parents are requested to call the school teacher in advance of early collection. Parents are required to sign the STUDENT RELEASE FROM SCHOOL DURING SCHOOL HOURS (SISC FORM 2011004) signed by concerned school and clinic staff to be presented to guard on duty as the child leaves school premises. C. Child’s Release to Persons Unfamiliar to SIS Staff 1. Child is inside the school premises For children to be collected from the school during/after school hours other than their usual collector known to SIS staff, collectors are required to to fill in the REQUEST TO RELEASE CHILD FROM SCHOOL (SISC FORM 2011-005) to be handed to the schoolteacher by the child and to be forwarded to the information staff. In cases where the parent wasn’t able to sign the request form, they are required to call the class teacher at least one hour in advance. In both cases identification papers of the person collecting the child will be asked for. Amended November 2012 Page 2 of 3 Star International School Health and Safety Policy 2. Bus Dropping When dropping small children home, bus assistants should be informed of any new person(s) who will be collecting the child from the bus. Any parent who opts not to send their child home by bus should inform the class teacher an hour before the school ends. SNACKS AND LUNCHES 1. Parents are reminded to send their child healthy foods and drinks (NO JUNK FOODS AND FIZZY DRINKS) sufficient enough for their snacks and lunch so a child will not be tempted to ask from other children’s food. By sharing food a child may end up eating foods that he/she is allergic to that may be detrimental to his/her health. Also when children share food they will be sharing bacteria from the foods touched by other children’s dirty hands or from foods prepared unhygenically by others. 2. Parents should be reminded to send foods that are not easily spoiled and packed in temperature controlled containers to avoid dangers of food poisoning. CLEANLINESS A daily check on personal hygiene will be conducted to school children so as to help them value the importance of good hygiene for their personal, social, emotional and health benefits. Parents should be reminded to make sure that your child comes to school properly dressed and groomed. Daily checks on hygiene will be conducted in the most discreet way by school teacher/assistant and clinic staff so as not to embarrass any child. It will always be the schools aim for a child to enjoy school with friends and not away from friends, that a child will be spared by being the ridicule of the class thus losing his/her young confidence just because of unhealthy personal hygiene.
