CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS and GRADING SYSTEM
Mr. E. Shackelford
2015-2016
TEXT: Algebra 2: Concepts, Skill, and Problem Solving, Glencoe 2008
Textbook website: www.glencoe.com
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Mathematics requires consistent effort and rigorous study of detailed language and problem solving
techniques. All mathematical instruction is planned to meet the needs, abilities and interest of all students.
GRADING SYSTEM:
Semester grades are determined by dividing the total points earned by the total number of points possible.
Points are earned from tests, quizzes, classwork, projects, homework, and other assignments determined
by the teacher. Students can regularly view their grades on-line at Q Connection https://q.conejousd.org. It
is the responsibility of the student to report any concerns to the teacher. Please save all work to check
against the computer. Letter grades will follow a normal plus/minus grading scale:
A
90 – 100%
B
C
D
F
80 – 89%
70 – 79%
60 – 69%
59 or below
TESTS:
Tests are always announced in advance. Generally, each test is worth 100 points. A department final exam
is given at the end of each semester and will be worth 150 to 200 points. During any test, the room must be
silent until all papers have been returned.
If a student is absent only one day before the test, which is always a review day, and then returns the day of
the test, the student will be expected to take the test with the rest of the class on the scheduled test day. If a
student is absent the day of the test, and then returns the following day, the student needs to be prepared to
take the test the day. Students who are absent for extended periods of time should try to keep up with the
homework as posted, then meet with me upon their return to schedule any make-up tests.
QUIZZES:
Quizzes are usually announced in advance. Quizzes may cover any material that has been presented in
class or assigned as homework and are usually worth 5-10 points. Quizzes are designed to prepare student
for chapter tests and need to be completed before the test day. Quizzes should be made up before the
chapter test.
HOMEWORK:
Homework consists of book assignments, worksheets, and other work determined by the teacher.
Homework is assigned on a regular basis. Homework is checked daily for completeness and structure
only. It the student’s responsibility to check for incorrect answers and make corrections. See textbook
answers, WHS Math Center, or www.hotmath.com for HW help.
Each assignment must:
1. Include name, period, and date and be labeled with a proper heading
2. Show proper problem solving form with neat and organized work
3. Show an effort to complete all assigned problems
Homework will be checked daily. Each assignment will receive 5 points. Incomplete assignments may
receive 3 points, and no assignment will receive zero points.
CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION:
Students are encouraged to take notes and ask questions. Time in class is very important. Classwork is
assigned and on a regular basis, and may or may not be collected. Collected assignments are usually worth
5 points. Classwork assignments will be collected it the end of the period. Classwork can ALWAYS be made
up prior to taking the chapter test. After the chapter test any missing classwork will result in a zero score.

CALCULATOR:
A graphing calculator will be an important tool used in Algebra 2CP. The model used for demonstration
purposes in class is the Texas Instruments Ti-84. Any calculator in the Ti-83 or Ti-84 family works in a
similar fashion. The same cannot be said for other makes and models of calculators.
Calculator features and graphing utilities found on cell phones, tablets or other electronic devices will
not be permitted in class and cannot be used on tests. Calculators with a CAS (computer algebra
system) found on calculators like the TI-Inspire, the TI-89 as well as other makes and models of
calculators will also not be permitted on tests.



Calculators are necessary during most tests.
There is to be no taping/recording of any kind in my classroom. (Ed Code 51512)
Cell phones, iPods, and headphones must be put away during class. Electronic devices
visible during tests/quiz will result in academic dishonesty action.

ACADEMIC HONESTY (Bd. Pol. 5131.9)
Definition: Academic Dishonesty is a deliberate attempt to disrupt the learning process by
misrepresenting another’s work as one’s own. Dishonesty during tests or classwork includes
unauthorized communicating; copying materials or allowing another student to copy; using prohibited
notes or devices; obtaining prior knowledge of test content; and/or removing or distributing all or part of
any test. Copying another person’s assignment; providing homework/classwork for another student to
replicate; plagiarizing or submitting a paper or project which is not one’s own work; and submitting
falsified information for grading purposes are also examples of dishonesty.
Consequences:
First Infraction
 The teacher will conference with the student and record a zero for that assignment.
 Within five school days, the teacher will notify the parent and send a referral to the appropriate
administrator noting the infraction.
 The student will be placed on contract, with the understanding that a second infraction in the
same or any other class will result in the student’s removal from the course in which the second
infraction occurred. The contract will remain in effect for two years from the date of infraction.
Second Infraction
 The teacher will send a referral to the appropriate administrator noting the infraction.
 Within five school days, the parent will be notified, and the student will be removed from the
course and placed in a Study Hall with a failing grade for the semester.

SUPPLIES:
Students need to come to class prepared everyday with their textbook, notebook (graph paper), and pencils.
A graphing calculator (Ti84 plus) is highly recommended.
Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
