COURSE CONTENT
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:
Introduction to Probability and Statistics is a course in statistical methods that will equip the student with the ability to work with large
amounts of data. Upon completion of the course students will be able to use mathematical models to design statistical experiments,
organize and interpret data, and use data to predict and communicate the meaning of specific data to those unfamiliar with the
procedures and methods associated with statistics and probability.
UNITS OF STUDY:
 Speaking of Statistics
 Measurement in Statistics
 Visual Displays of Data
 Describing Data
 A Normal World
 Probability in Statistics
 Correlation and Causality
 From Samples to Populations
 Hypothesis Testing
 t Tests, Two-Way Tables, and ANOVA
EVALUATION:
Quarter Grade:
Test, Quizzes, and Performance Tasks: 80%
Homework/Classwork and participation: 20%
Course Grade:
First Quarter: 40%
Second Quarter: 40%
Final Exam: 20%
CLASSROOM POLICIES:
~ Absences, lateness, and plagiarism will be dealt with according to school policy. See your student handbook for details.
~ If you miss class to participate in a school-approved trip or activity, assignments will still be due on original due date. See your
student handbook for details.
~ Classroom expectations and procedures will be discussed as often as necessary and are expected to be followed. See the
“Classroom Procedures” document for detailed information.
HOMEWORK POLICY:
~ Homework will be assigned regularly and is due the following day. Late homework will receive no credit. Work must be shown for
each problem; answers only is not acceptable. Grades for homework will be determined as follows:
Full credit (2pts): All problems are completed with work shown.
Half credit (1 pt): Partially done, with at least half completed and work is shown.
No credit (0 pts): Less than half has been attempted and/or no work is shown.
~ You will receive two “free” homework passes for the entire semester. Choose wisely!
PORTFOLIO ENTRIES:
Projects and selected performance assessments all make great portfolio entries.
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION:
~ Extra credit opportunities will be given every week. At the end of each section in your book there are “projects for the internet and
beyond”. You may complete up to 2 per week (point values vary based on level of difficulty) and the extra points will go towards
the “homework/classwork” portion of your grade. Be sure to take advantage of these opportunities!
~ I will make any necessary arrangements in order to provide extra help. Please let me know in advance if you plan on staying.
~ Homework, class notes, study guides, etc. will be posted on my website daily. Be sure to use this resource!
