ESLR 310 TEST ONE STUDY GUIDE DATE: TUESDAY, 2/7/2011 This test will include both the textbook and the novel, as well as new readings. You should study Interactions 2, the main textbook, Chapters 1 and 2, in particular: Ch. 1:1 "Education: A Reflection of Society", pp. 4-11 (esp. pp. 7-8). Ch. 1:2 "Campus Life is Changing", pp. 12-17 (esp. pp. 13-15). Ch. 1:3 pp. 17-21. Ch. 2:1 "A City That's Doing Something Right" pp. 24-32 (esp. pp. 27-29). Ch. 2:2 "Sick Building Syndrome" pp. 32-38 (esp. pp. 34-36). Ch. 2:3 pp. 38-45 Be able to summarize the main points of each story. Think about your own opinions and experiences relative to the ideas in each story. To prepare, re-read and make up some practice questions about the story. You should know the key vocabulary from the lists on pp. 21 & 45. Be able to write a sentence, a definition, or correctly complete a sentence with these words. You should know the prefixes, roots and suffixes from the handout (meaning and example word). You should study The Pearl, pp. 1-17 only (Part One). Know the setting, the characters, and the main events in the plot up to p. 17. Know the most important vocabulary to describe the setting, characters and plot correctly, e.g. poor, scorpion, brush house, sting/stung, neighbors/neighborhood, fisherman, sunrise, etc. To prepare, re-read and make up some practice questions about the story. You will have a new reading that you have not seen before (but with similar ideas and topics to what we have studied). Guess vocabulary using many different methods. Mark and annotate the paper. Explain the main idea of a paragraph in one or two sentences in your own words. Write a short summary of the story in your own words. No notes or textbooks allowed. If you need to use something from the story, I will give you a copy of the sections you need. English-English dictionaries are allowed during the test (not bilingual or translating dictionaries). Don’t forget to bring yours!!! There may be a small vocabulary quiz as part of the test – for that part, no dictionaries are allowed. Give the meaning of each part (or the part of speech, for the suffix). Give ANOTHER word that has the same prefix/root/suffix. Read a news article, mark it and annotate it (make notes), write the main idea of a paragraph, and write a 100-word summary of the whole story (in your own words).
