Rev. Fall 2009 ACCT 2033, COMPUTERIZED ACCOUNTING Course Philosophy and Instructor Requirements Philosophy: The course is designed to prepare students to be able to keep books through the use of accounting software. Students’ knowledge of accounting concepts and principles is reinforced through use of the computer. Peachtree software (comes with textbook) which is updated yearly is used at this time because it is superior to other commercial accounting software and the concepts can easily be transferred to other commercially available accounting software. Prerequisite: ACCT 2003 with a grade of C or better or consent of instructor. Instructor Objectives: The instructor’s teaching techniques should ensure that the students are able to: Develop the skills necessary to do general ledger computer accounting for service and merchandising businesses. Complete exercises using accounts receivable, accounts payable, invoicing, payroll, inventory, and job cost systems. Complete the computer accounting cycle using Peachtree Complete Accounting. Prepare financial statements and complete financial statement analysis. Course Teaching Requirements: The following should be followed by all instructors teaching this course (online and in the traditional setting). 1. Chapters 1-18 and Projects 1-4 should be covered this semester using Peachtree software. 2. The following should be completed by each student, one chapter at a time over Chapters 1-18: a. Read the chapter, working the chapter illustrations while reading. b. Students should complete and submit Exercises 1and/or 2 for grading before starting next chapter, and the instructor needs to grade and make comments on errors within two school days. 3. The following should be completed by each student, one project at a time over Projects 1-4. a. Complete the project. b. Students should submit the project for grading before starting next chapter or project, and the instructor needs to grade and make comments on errors within two school days. 4. A test should be given over each individual chapter. a. Each test can be objective over the material in each chapter, and tests can be taken online or in the classroom. b. End-of Chapter Exercises, Projects, and Chapter Tests should count no more than 50 percent of the student’s total grade. 5. A midterm exam should be given over Chapters 1-10 and Project 1. a. It must be proctored* in class or at an approved proctoring location; the proctoring location must have Peachtree software installed on testing computers. b. The exam should have an objective and application part, including work covered to this point. c. This exam should count 25 percent** of the course grade. 6. The final exam should be comprehensive, but primarily focused over Chapters 11-18 and Projects 2-4. a. It must be proctored* in class or at an approved proctoring location; the proctoring location must have Peachtree software installed on testing computers. b. The exam can have an object part or not but should have an application part, including entire textbook application. c. This exam should count 25 percent** of the course grade. * Proctored midterm exams in online classes are important so the student and the instructor can better evaluate the student’s potential for success in completing the course before the drop date. It is especially important in this learning environment since the instructor does not have face-to-face contact with students and cannot know for sure it is the student who is doing the work. ** The midterm and final exam should account for 50 percent of the course grade in this class. Assessment Responsibilities: Instructors teaching this course (online and traditional) will be expected to participate in assessment activities as dictated by the division. You will be given further information/instruction by the lead instructor during the term assessments are to be completed.
