Job Description:
An emergency medical technician-basic (EMT-B) examines and assesses the patient, recognizes
signs and symptoms regarding illness or injury, and uses proper procedures to render basic
emergency medical care. Paid positions are available in the state of Iowa.
Education & Experience Required:
An applicant must be at least 17 years of age, proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English,
and must have successfully completed a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). He/she
must have a minimum of 118 classroom and clinical hours, ambulance/rescue field experience hours
as may be required by the training program, and must successfully complete a state written and
practical exam.
Continuing Education:
Twenty-four hours of continuing education are required biennially for certification renewal as well as
having a current CPR course completion card.
Examination:
Applicants must pass a written and practical examination approved by the state.

Job Description:
An emergency medical technician-intermediate (EMT-I) has received additional training in patient
assessment, intravenous therapy, use of esophageal airways (an advanced technique for
maintaining an open airway), and automated defibrillation. Paid positions are available in the state of
Iowa.
Education & Experience Required:
Applicants must have a high school diploma or its equivalent; have a current certification as an EMTB; complete a minimum of 54 classroom hours, clinical hours and ambulance field experience as
necessary to complete the patient contact requirements; and, successfully complete a state written
and practical exam.
Continuing Education:
Thirty-six hours of continuing education are required biennially for certification renewal as well as
having a current course completion card in CPR.

Job Description:
An emergency medical technician - paramedic (EMT-P) has received training in all of the advanced
emergency medical care skills including cardiac evaluation and treatment, medication effects and
treatment, and advanced airway management techniques. The Paramedic Specialist, having greater
knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology, is the highest EMT certification obtainable. Paid
positions are available in the state of Iowa.
Education & Experience Required:
Applicants must have a high school diploma or its equivalent; have a current certification as an EMTI or EMT-B; complete a minimum of 280 classroom hours (600 for special-ists); complete clinical
hours, and ambulance field experience as necessary to meet patient contact requirements;
successfully complete a state written and practical exam.
Continuing Education:
Forty-eight hours of continuing education are required biennially for certification renewal as well as
having a current course completion card in CPR. The requirement for specialists is 60 hours.

Job Description:
The emergency rescue technician (ERT) course is designed to train first responders, EMT-Bs, EMTIs, and paramedics in various rescue techniques. The topics covered in the course include: rescue
from heights and depths, extrication from automobiles, agricultural rescue, rescue from water, and
other special hazards.
Education & Experience Required:
An applicant must be certified as a first responder, EMT-I, paramedic, or EMT- B
(or its former equivalent EMT-A or EMT-D, no longer offered in Iowa); complete a minimum 40
classroom hours, complete ambulance/rescue field experience hours as may be required by the
training program. There are no mandatory renewal requirements and there are no fees for initial
certification or renewal of certification.
Continuing Education:
There are no continuing education requirements for certificate renewal.

Job Description:
Tractor-trailer truck drivers drive gasoline or diesel-powered tractor-trailers, usually long distances,
to transport and deliver products; drive trucks to a destination, applying knowledge of commercial
driving regulations and skill in maneuvering vehicle in difficult situations; inspect truck for defects
before and after trips and submit report indicating truck condition; maintain driver log according to
the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) regulations; and, may assist workers in loading and
unloading truck. They must also perform routine maintenance.
Anyone driving tractor-trailers, single unit trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating over 26,000
pounds, or anyone carrying a placardable quantity of hazardous materials must apply for licensure.
Education & Experience Required:
A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is necessary to drive a truck or truck-tractor semi trailer in
Iowa and the applicant for this license must be at least 18 years of age. The U.S. Department of
Transportation establishes minimum medical qualifications for truck drivers who are engaged in
interstate commerce. An interstate driver must be at least 21 years old and meet minimum medical
requirements. They must pass a physical examination every two years. In addition, drivers must take
a written examination on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations of the U.S. Department of
Transportation.
Individual companies may have "years of experience" or other criteria. Most jobs require the
applicant to pass a federal DOT physical every two years. Applicants over the age of 70 are eligible
for a two-year license only.
Continuing Education:
There are no continuing education requirements for license renewal.
Examination:
An applicant must pass a written and vision examination and a driving test demonstrating ability to
drive a tractor-trailer truck in order to qualify for the Commercial Drivers License (CDL). These tests
are given at 18 driver's license stations around the state. The CDL driving and written tests are
waived for new Iowa residents who possess a CDL from their former state.

Duration: Two years if age 70 or older; five years for all others above age 18
Renewal: $16 - Two Years; $40 - Five Years
