NEWS TEAM – Caitln Cummings, Eden Engler, Grant Gaines, TJ Lee SPORTS TEAM – Pat Corbett, David DeFulvio, Brenna Richards, Kaitlyn Shawver ENTERTAINMENT STAFF – Akobi Hylton, Sam Kline EDITORIAL STAFF – Katie Chicano, Patrick Gray, Cole Meisle, Vivian Tran SPECIAL FEATURES – Skylar Forrest, Erin McCallum, Alison Prager, Linghai Wang EDITOR-IN-CHIEF – Mr. Langin THE NEWS The New Cafeteria By TJ Lee The new cafeteria is located near the 7th grade art room and cafeteria A. The new cafeteria will be finished around the days between the week after spring break. The new cafeteria will be painted and will still use the old tables. People will move our tables from the old cafeteria to the new one. To be prepared for the new cafeteria they put numbers on the tables to know where to put the tables when they move them. The students are being moved to the new cafeteria for the construction at old cafeteria B and they do not want any of the students to be injured or harmed. The new cafeteria has some tables outside and most of them are inside. There are around 10 tables outside and the rest are inside. But, the rest of the tables are inside. The person who decides which table sits inside or outside is Mrs.Restifo but, she will usually pick the quiet and rule following tables. Don’t be sad if Mrs.Restifo picked your table to be inside the new cafeteria has windows. Mrs.Restifo is also very excited for the new cafeteria. She is excited for the painted walls, the table arrangements, and the new way we can get our food. The food can be gotten at the new salad bar, sandwich bar, or can get the platter. The new cafeteria is going to be that everyone will love. With it’s new ways to get lunch from the salad bar, sandwich bar, or buying something else. Don’t forget that some tables might be eating outside. Also, the new cafeteria has windows and painted walls. The new cafeteria is coming soon in between the days in the week after spring break. Principal of Haverford Middle Creates New School By Grant Gaines Haverford Middle School was built in 1922 and was is in need of repairs and a new design. Haverford Middle School principal, Miss Carol Restifo, has managed and organized both students and contruction of repairs started in the summer of 2008. She also reported that all the repairs will be completed by January 2012. We all heard that the new cafeteria is going to be finished by the time spring break is over. I also learned that it is supposed to be so big that it can consumes up to 500 students. This giant cafeteria was built from two pre-existing boiler rooms that were under the school that was used a long time ago probably in the early1900’s. Also, the new, bigger cafeteria is suppose to be the new “in spot” in school. It is to include cool new food stations like “make your own sandwich bar”, a salad bar, plus as a bonus it also includes new windows. Besides the cafeteria, other news at that Haverford Middle School is that they are making a new bigger library. It includes more books with air condition for summer time. Now we are prepared for the summer heat. All the construction is mostly about fixing and repairing the old school. Seeing that the school was made in 1922 the HMS Principal Miss. Restifo said, “It its long overdue.” When asked about what she thinks about all the construction that is going on Miss. Restifo also revealed that the construction site right outside the 7th grade science teacher room Ms. Deborah McGlone’s is going to be transformed into a small courtyard with 1 to 2 tables. This makes more flexibility in an active learning environment. wife. When Mr. Tallon came back to school, he reported to his class that the reason why he was absent was because his wife had given birth to a lovely baby girl. Julianna Hilaine Tallon was born on Sunday, March 20th, at twelve fifty-seven pm. Julianna weighed six pounds and five and a half ounces. She happens to be Mr. Tallon's first child. I also had the chance to ask Mr. Tallon how he felt when he finally had the chance to be with his newborn baby. "It was an exciting and emotional moment for my wife and I." And yes, Mr. Tallon is planning on having more children. It's A Girl! By Eden Engler Mr. Tallon, 7th grade gym teacher, has welcomed a lovely baby girl into his family. If you do have Mr. Tallon as your gym teacher, you might have noticed a few weeks ago that he was absent for a few days. Well, if you don't know why he was absent, it was because he was at Lankenau Hospital with his QuickTime™ and a decompressor are needed to see this picture. HMS Softball Team By Caitlin Cummings Haverford Middle School softball team has two coaches Mrs.Grayston and Mr.Karwoski. Their is 14 players on the team with one manger. These girls have won one game out of two games because of the weather. This softball team has several pitchers; Danielle Nester, Lauren Vanstone, Carolyn Spellacy and Erin Gerard. At first base is; Jenna Keating and Kimmy Cantwell. At second base is; Kaitlyn Shawver, Megan Nester and Lauren Schwartz. Lastly the third base girls are one again Lauren Vanstone, Morgan Wren, and Erin Gerade. So far these girls have played E.T. Richardson and Springton Lake. Mrs. Grayston had a team quote “I’m a beast, I’m an animal, I’m that monster in the mirror, The headliner, finisher, I’m the closer winner. Best when under pressure with seconds left I show up. If you really want more, scream it out louder. Get it on the floor bring out the fire, and light it up, take it up higher. Gunna push it to the limit give it more.” THE SPORTS REPORT Will the Champs Keep on Succeeding? By Brenna Richards It has only been a few games past and it’s still early in the season. The girls’ 7th grade lacrosse team has been battling their way past other teams with mostly all victories. Monday, April 4th, 2011, the girls contributed to an outstanding performance against Paxon Hallow Middle School. Amanda Battista, Olivia Beck, Celine Bibonne, Ali Binder, Hanna Breslin, Emmi Casulli, Rhiannon Connell, Nina DeAngelis, Alyssa DiGirolamo, Trisha Dorsaneo, Kristin Dressel, Kayla Fili, Allison Geiger, Tess Horan, Emilia Livi, Ellie Marshall, Jess Mellon, Nikki Park, Brenna Richards, Lauren Schreiner, Danielle Smith, Maddie Smith, Issy Swantak, Babe Willis, and Anna Zachwieja all put in the full team effort to pull off their 11-3 victory. Thanks to Battista with one goal, Breslin with one, Geiger with one, Horan with two, Mellon with two, M. Smith with one and Zachwieja with three, they all made it possible to finish off the team effort. Coming from Susan O’Grady, the 7th grade girls’ lacrosse coach, the Fords team played well, passed a lot, guarded their man tightly, and had tremendous efforts and amazing saves by Rhiannon Connell, the goalie. O’Grady also stated how the positions of each player worked together as much as their skills allowed them, and that the team should keep up the hard work, helping these phenomenal lady fords to keep on succeeding in the future games. Favorite Philadelphia Sports Team Survey By Dave DeFulvio Have you ever thought of what other peoples favorite Philadelphia sports team is? Well lucky for you I took a survey of 70 people in the middle school asking them what there favorite sports team is. Here were the choices of the team we had the Phillies, Eagles, Union, 76ers, and last but not least the Flyers. QuickTime™ and a decompressor are needed to see this picture. There was a blow out for one particular and that team was the 2008 world champion and 4th straight year as division champions the Philadelphia Phillies they had 61% of the votes the team in second with 25% were the Runners up in the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals the Philadelphia Flyers. Coming in third in this survey we have the 76ers with 8% fourth is the Eagles with 2% and the Union with 1%. I asked my Friend Pat Corbet Why he voted for the 76ers and this is what he said" I wouldn't care if the sixers were in dead last I would still vote for them because they could beat any other philly sports team in a B-Ball game" Looks like my friend Pat is looking for a challenge or in the defence of his team. Overall it looks like the Phillies would have to be the crowd favorite only because they were world champions and won the division 4 straight years in a row. If you want to prove me wrong then do it youself and give it to me. Favorite Sports to Play By Pat Corbett Sixty-seven students of the Haverford Middle School were recently surveyed about what their favorite sport is. The choices were gymnastics, wrestling, hockey, lacrosse, boxing, football, soccer, basketball and last but not least baseball/softball. QuickTime™ and a decompressor are needed to see this picture. The results are in and actually baseball/softball was the sport with the most votes. That had twenty-five percent of the votes. The next two sports were basketball and soccer. They tied with twenty-two percent each. The next place was football. It had thirteen percent. The next favorite sport was lacrosse with ten percent. Then came boxing and hockey tied with three percent. The two sports that tied for last place were wrestling and gymnastics. They had one percent each. So you were wondering what sport was the most popular in Haverford Middle School and we told you. The answer is baseball/softball. HMS Girls Softball Trumps Springton Lake Girls Softball By Kaitlyn Shawver The Haverford Middle School girls 7th grade softball team came to their game against the Springton Lake Middle School girls 7th grade softball team with their bats swinging and their gloves stopping. The pitching of the Springton Lake team was no match for the bats of the Fords. There were many walks, singles, doubles, and even a home run hit by Lauren Schwartz which brought in 2 other runners. The first inning was the longest, lasting 22 minutes with 10 walks, 4 singles, 1 double, and 1 homerun. The batters were able to bat around 2 times through the order due to the lack of pitching on the Springton Lake team. The fierce pitching of Danielle Nester and Lauren Vanstone and the outstanding fielding by many of the other Ford players, helped keep the Springton Lake team to only 4 scored runs. Even though the Springton Lake’s team bats were starting to swing in the last inning, with some walks and singles, they were still no competition for the Fords fielders which were able to tag out numerous runners, catch pop ups with ease, and eliminate runners heading to home plate. The Fords were able to hold off any attempt at a come back and go on to win the game with a final score of Haverford 17 and Springton Lake 4. That's Entertainment! Musicians Wanted! By Akobi Hylton Calling all musicians to join the Music Club! The Music Club is an entertaining club where the students of Haverford Middle School are able to play modern instrumental and modern songs. Mr. Huth is the person in charge of the Music Club. It started last year. “Dr. Ritter sent out an email to teachers to see if anyone had any alternative theatre ideas for students because the school was not sure if there was going to be a musical due to construction. I had an idea for a club where students who are learning to play instruments can join and meet other musicians in the school in the hopes of creating a band.” Many students enjoy the music club. It is an entertaining club because instead of playing orchestra instruments, you can play instruments you want to play. Qui ckTime™ and a decompressor are needed to see thi s pi cture. Mr. Huth wants a specific kind of students to join and participate in his club. “I want students who are open minded to different styles of music and who are dedicated to learning how to play their instruments. This isn’t a club where you can just hang out and not contribute in some way” Mr. Huth will be holding a showcase that will be open to all the students in the middle school. Of course you will have to try out. “My dad was always playing music in my home like The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Yes. He is a drummer, so I’ve always been around music. I would find myself drumming on my desk in elementary school, which would sometimes annoy my teachers.” Says Mr. Huth. Overall, the club is very fun to join, a fun learning experience. Its fun to interact through music. Coming This June To A Theater Near You! By Sam Kline No, it’s not another Harry Potter or Tron sequel, and this theater won’t cost you $10 to get in. I’m talking about a theater REALLY near you…right here at our own Haverford Middle School, in the newly remodeled auditorium. And while the actors may not arrive in limos surrounded by paparazzi, they’re still some of the most talented people you’ll ever see. I’m talking about this year’s performance of the HMS Actors’ Workshop, hosted and directed by 7th Grade L.A. teacher Mr. Langin. This special event, scheduled for June 10th, at 7pm, is the final performance of eighteen 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who have been “hamming it up” for months in their after-school actor’s workshop club, run by Mr. Langin. When I asked Mr.Langin why he chose this kind of performance instead of the usual song-anddance type of show, he said that he really didn’t like musicals all that much when he was in school, and that he had been in an improv group when he was in college. When the principal asked him if he’d like to sponsor an after-school activity for students, he thought an improv group would be fun to try. This is his second year organizing the event. And if you’re wondering what the show will be about, you’ll just have to come and find out! That’s the fun of improv…not even the actors know what they’re doing until the very last minute! Editorials School Lunches: Good for Us to Eat? By Vivian Tran Haverford Middle School's lunches are not good enough to eat. Many of the food in the cafeteria are unhealthy. Not only is it unhealthy, it is also not mouthwatering. A lot of the food is boring. More interesting and healthy food should replace the food we have now. QuickTime™ and a decompressor are needed to see this picture. If you buy lunch every day, you will see that the cafeteria sells hot dogs . Hot dogs have been favored by many people, but hot dogs are not good for health. Did you know that hot dogs can be a risk factor for childhood cancer? Peter et al. studied the relationship between the intake of certain foods and the risk of leukemia in children from birth to age 10 in Los Angeles County between 1980 and 1987. He found out that children eating more than 12 hot dogs per month have nine times the normal risk of developing children leukemia. Researchers Sarusua and Savitz discovered that children who eat hot dogs one or more times per week are at a higher risk of brain cancer. Many other foods in the cafeteria are unhealthy too. The average slice of pepperoni pizza has 25 grams of fat. Most people should aim for no more than 50 grams of fat per day. "The pizza has a weird color," says Grace Sandusky, a seventh grade student, which proves that the pizza is not goods for us to eat. The overcooked and undercooked are not healthy either, like Lily Lo, a seventh grade student complained, "I hate it when the French fries are either overcooked or undercooked." There are some new food that could be added, and some food that could appear way more often. Jessica Smith, a Giant Panda, exclaims that lasagna would make a brilliant addition. She also said that the oranges and tater tots should appear more often. Skylar Forrest, also a Giant Panda, believed that berries would be nice too. She claimed that berries are healthy, and tastes good too. Lily Lo, a seventh grader in the Komodo Dragons says, "They should make pasta more often." My opinion is the school's lunches are not healthy and they taste plain. I would suggest to pack lunch more often, and buy less. Also, bring a healthy lunch. I believe the school lunches does not influence students to be healthy and choose the right foods. If they are trying to give us unhealthy food, they are pretty much telling us to make bad decisions. Should Chewing Gum During School be Allowed? By Katie Chicano I asked students and teachers of HMS if chewing gum in school should be allowed. Most students had said yes of course and most teachers said no. I had interviewed teachers and the main reason why they say no is because, there would be gum everywhere. In the halls, on desks, and on the floor. I had also interviewed two 7th grade students, Erin McCallum and Samantha Boyle. The first question was, “ What do you think about chewing gum in school?” and both of thier response was, “ I think we should because it helps us concentrate on our work, and if we are allowed to chew gum during the PSSA’S, then we should be allowed during class.” The second question I asked was, “ If you were a teacher at HMS, what would you think about this?” The response was “ If it helps the students pay attention and learn better then yes.” The teachers question was “ If you were a student at HMS, what would you say about this?” They said, “ Since I loved gum as a kid then maybe or they said, no because I was never a big fan of gum as a kid.” My third question was, “ What do you think most students would say?” and thier response was, “ Most kids already chew gum, but I think they would like to chew it without getting in trouble.” QuickTime™ and a decompressor are needed to see this picture. My opinion about this rule would be yes. Some teachers already chew gum in school and they do not get yelled at for it. Also I think it makes no sense that we are allowed to chew it during PSSA’S and not during class. This is what some of your fellow classmates and your teachers think about this. What would you say about this? Construction, How It Should Change! By Cole Meisle The construction in our school should change. There are a few reasons I feel this way. The construction is loud, makes the hallways cramped and adds confusion. I think it would help if the schedule were different One other major annoyance is the noise it makes. The teachers need to speak louder, and the students can’t hear very well. We can hear drills and hammers all day long. It is difficult to learn under those circumstances. I think there is a trouble for the workers as well. Because they have to go through the hallways sometimes between periods when the hallways are cramped up and hard to move around in. Sometimes the workers need to divide hallways by adding walls. That makes more crowded hallways, and, for the people with lockers this is torture. I would know, I have one of those lockers. With some people the walls mean new lockers and rooms, which also means new combinations and finding new rooms all over again. This is a pain and adds confusion in a day when we should be learning. The way it should change is either the workers should work faster, or the workers should change the schedule of it all. I have even asked some people in the school how they think it should change, and they have said the workers should put more effort working on the weekends, on breaks, and on vacations. The workers should work on the major things, over the major breaks and vacations, of our school. The days we are there the workers should work on the less important things, like the heating, air conditioning, lights, and fire alarms. In the summer the workers should focus on one thing, like the cafeterias and the rooms. I think on the weekdays they should work on very small things and nothing major. I would love for the construction to be done because it is noisy and annoying but because it isn’t it would be better if the schedule was a different. Buses for Sports and Too Early By Pat Gray The buses for the Middle School are supposed to come to your stop at the timeframe of 7:00-7:30, I believe that, that is way too early for students to get up, then come to school, the teachers to expect them be wide awake, well rested, and in a good mood. If they want them to be like that they should try and change the bus schedule. The other issue our school has with buses is that there is no late bus and a bus for students who have detention or a after school activity. If they cant walk to their house from the school, and both of their parents work and cant pick you up, or and if you don’t have a cell phone to contact anyone to come pick you up. Do you feel the same way I do for these conflicts in the middle school? Special Features Come Share the Artist in You By Skylar Forrest Out of ten, the students in the art club rate it, “9007, definitely! It needs to be above ten because it's so awesome.” they said. But what makes the art club so special? Well for one thing, members can use any type of art materials they like as long as it's available. For example, members can draw, paint, scrapbook, use clay, and so much more. Art club gathers in Mrs. Hagerty room after school every Tuesday. Mrs. Hagerty is the seventh grade art teacher. QuickTime™ and a decompressor are needed to see this picture. When I asked Mrs. Hagerty, what her favorite part about the art club is, she said “I like to see so many kids come down to participate.” I also asked her, “Why do you love to do the art club so much?” she said, “I love to do the art club because I love to see kids enjoy doing it as much as I do.” Mrs. Hagerty has been running the art club for about 15 years. The student members of the art club recommend this club to others. One of the students of the art club said “I have been doing art since I was in Preschool and when I found out that there was an art club here, I was so excited for it.” Another said “Art club is so much fun because you can hang out with your friends and do art at the same time.” So why not come to the art club after school every Tuesday to see for yourself! Seventh Heaven, Who They Are By Linghai Wang Seventh heaven as many know is the best choir at HMS. It was formed by Seth Gardner, the middle school chorus teacher, in 1980 since then they have been to nationals in MENC (Music Educators National Conference) once, MENC eastern division twice, seven times for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association state conference, chosen by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association to perform “We The People 200” for the bicentennial, preformed on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy center in Washington D.C., and at the State capitol Rotunda five times. They also have won first place 12 times at concert in the parks and Music Showcase Festival competitions, judged best overall choir eight times, and highest scoring choir of the entire season four times, and told they sound better than almost all High school Choirs. They also sing songs in many different languages. From a former teacher at HMS “…Seventh Heaven is always my favorite group”. To get into this group you must audition in October twice. The group sings a copula, which is music that is unaccompanied. Though it is strict that you must be at rehearsals by 7:00 A.M., on the inside it’s not really that strict but fun most of the time. The name seventh heaven is not 7th heaven but rather seventh heaven because it is the highest level of heaven in the Hindi religion. This year the people in the group are Haley Amdur, Drew Armstrong, Scott Berkowitz, Zeke Bolce-Schick, Julie Cohen, Emily Denny, Jacob Dewerth-Jaffe, Courtney Elcock, Adelaide Fiegenbaum, Brian Havlick, James Heibert, Cindy Hosan, Lindsey Koma, Davis Kurdyla, Ben Kurtze, Christopher Lee, Tess Mallon, Colin McCrossan, Sophie McKeand, Brian Melton, Megha Nagaswami, Curtis Parker, Lulu Peach, Maddie Pelchat, Owen Pollock, Sofia Ryan, Andrea Scota, Aria Senatore, Daneille Smith, Isabelle Swantak, Linghai Wang, Dylan Winoski, Emily Wolfe, and Jacob Wolfe. Climate Control-Who Knew It Was A Way Of Making Our School A Better Place By Alison Prager The climate control group is a place where faculty members are aloud to voice any concerns or opinions that they have on making our school Haverford Middle School a better place. As I asked the eight grade Spanish teacher Ms. Gordon about the group she stated “The idea originally was to have the principals and administration join with the group…to solve any problems that arise.” The meeting of the climate control takes place once a month, usually the last Thursday of every month. Some teachers of the school at HMS get together on their own time to discuss the issues they have seen and try to present their ideas to the administration. The committee could discuss almost anything “range from issues such as school dress code to the timing of the bells” says seventh grade Language Arts teacher Mr. Langin. When I asked some of the students about Climate Control at HMS no one seemed to know anything about it, a seventh grader Audrey Ellison from Haverford Middle School said “ what? I have never heard of that in my life”. Now even though the students at Haverford Middle School do not participate in this event, they still have the right to know about this committee and what it does for the school. “a place to voice concerns with the goal of creating a more positive climate at HMS (hence the name)” says Ms. Gorgon from eighth grade Spanish here at HMS. So here solves the mystery of the unknown Climate Control, now students can finally understand. QuickTime™ and a decompressor are needed to see this picture. 7th Grade PSSA’s, Good or Bad? By Erin McCallum I went around asking students at the Haverford Middle School a few questions about the 7th grade PSSA’s. A 7th grade student by the name of Alison Prager, said, “The 7th grades PSSA’s are fun and a great idea because they help you’re learning skills, but we should only have them on half day. If we have them on half days then we can just come right into school do the PSSA’s and then go right home.” Another thing she said was “I think it is a great idea that we do not need to take the science PSSA’s in 7th grade because it is not a major subject like L.A. or math, so, we don’t need to take it this early.” The last thing she said about the PSSA’s was about chewing gum, she said, “we should definitely chew gum and continue chewing gum during the PSSA’s. Chewing gum helps you think better and concentrate more.” The next student I decided to ask is another 7th grade student and her name is Katie Chicano. Her thoughts about the PSSA’s were, “I think we have PSSA’s to prepare us for future test and especially helps prepare us for the 8th Grade PSSA’s.” She also said, “We don’t need to take the Science PSSA’s in 7th grade because we are just not prepared enough. By 8th grade we are prepared and that is why we take them in 8th grade.” The final thing she had to say about the PSSA’S was “we should chew gum during the PSSA’s because it helps you focus and think a lot better.” The last person I interviewed was Kaitlyn Shawver. She also happens to be a 7th grade student. But what she said about the PSSA’s was a little different then the others. What she said was, “I hate the PSSA’s they are way to long and take up to much of are time! We should only have to do 2 tests and that is it!” The next thing she said was, “we don’t take the science PSSA’s in 7th grade because we need to learn more and see if we need help in that spot of learning in school.” The last thing she said is similar to the other interviewers. She said, “Yes, we should chew gum because it helps us concentrate, but we should not blow bubbles because it will distract other students trying to take the test and then they will get off track.” I have learned a lot about the 7th grade PSSA’s from these three students. I hope to learn a little bit more about them and what they are like. Alison Prager, Katie Chicano, and Kaitlyn Shawver are all student of Mr. Langin’s class. He is a 7th grade language arts teacher at HMS and is on the giant Pandas team. Alison, Katie, and Kaitlyn gave a lot of information about the 7th grade PSSA’s. I would soon want to learn a little bit of information about other PSSA’s in different grades. This was a great experience, and hope to learn more from other students at HMS. Thank you for taking the time to read our newspaper. We appreciate the support of all of the teachers, students, and staff that helped us with this task. We hope that our efforts helped you learn more about our school that we care about so deeply. -- Mr. Langin and his crew. KK rules!
