About Helen M. Stummer
Helen M. Stummer has, in the tradition of the socially concerned photographer,
Dedicated her life work to portraying the dignity and struggles of the poor and the disadvantaged.
Stummer holds degrees in studio art and visual sociology, a background that enabled her to
witness with an acute social awareness and a keen aesthetic eye, the lives of the individuals
she became acquainted with. She recorded the people she spent time with, in some cases decades,
and chronicled the aspects of their lives that they trustingly revealed to her. Her unique resolve
to remain connected to those she photographed over a period of time made it possible to capture
a history not often seen in documentary projects.
Stummer’s powerful photographs enlighten viewers to the harsh circumstances and conditions
of the residents who occupied the neighborhoods she frequented. She reveals the struggles
of these communities while allowing the humanity and dignity of the people who live there
to be honored and preserved.
