THE BROOKDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION is pleased to announce the following $250 Student Grants available for the 2013-2014 Academic Year The Helen M. Stummer Photography Grant Applicants must meet the following criteria: Photography Major at Brookdale Community College planning to transfer to a four-year college or university Have earned at least 12 credits at Brookdale Community College Registered for at least 9 credits for the 2012-2013 academic year Earned at least a 3.0 grade point average at Brookdale Community College (attach transcript) Have an interest in Socially Concerned Photography and must submit a portfolio or CD of 8-12 images representing this style of work Demonstrates financial need Have completed the basic level darkroom or digital photography course. Eligible students should write a one-page essay detailing their educational objectives, their interest in a socially concerned photography project, as well as their financial need. Student must also write a proposal for the particular project they wish to pursue. A letter of recommendation from a counselor or faculty member is also required. NATURE OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT Projects should be centered around the desire to make known a particular social circumstance of a humanitarian nature. or An exploration of a cultural, ethnic or social group other than one’s own. SUGGESTIONS 1. A suggestion from Helen M. Stummer is to approach someone you do not know and ask if you can photograph this individual over a period of time. As you become acquainted with this person, learn about them, learn about their family, activities, interests, etc. create a portfolio of work that documents what you come to know about them. 2. Choose a project that will help others become aware of a particular social or humanitarian situation that you feel has not been recognized well enough or has been totally ignored. You may get an idea for this project from stories in your local newspaper. 3. Explore and document with photography a cultural, ethnic or social group or organization that is outside the range of your personal experience. 4. Explore and document aspects of your own family or extended family to reveal the unique world they represent. TIME FRAME Applications must be submitted by April 22, 2012 About Helen M. Stummer Helen M. Stummer has, in the tradition of the socially concerned photographer, Dedicated her life work to portraying the dignity and struggles of the poor and the disadvantaged. Stummer holds degrees in studio art and visual sociology, a background that enabled her to witness with an acute social awareness and a keen aesthetic eye, the lives of the individuals she became acquainted with. She recorded the people she spent time with, in some cases decades, and chronicled the aspects of their lives that they trustingly revealed to her. Her unique resolve to remain connected to those she photographed over a period of time made it possible to capture a history not often seen in documentary projects. Stummer’s powerful photographs enlighten viewers to the harsh circumstances and conditions of the residents who occupied the neighborhoods she frequented. She reveals the struggles of these communities while allowing the humanity and dignity of the people who live there to be honored and preserved.
