MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

and Young People’s Strategic Plan. Community Paediatric Physiotherapists are part of the
Integrated Disabled Children’s Service based at the Moor lane Centre in Chessington,
funded jointly by the Royal Borough of Kingston and NHS Kingston, providing a
Physiotherapy service to children with a range of paediatric conditions, some of which will be
highly complex. Staff members autonomously manage a mixed caseload with a range of
conditions, including children with severe physical and cognitive impairment and disabilities.
To support and advise health colleagues, teaching professionals, parents and carers within

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES OF JOB
Operational
1. To be responsible for own practice and accountable for all aspects of Physiotherapy
care delivered to children eligible for the service, with support from senior colleagues.
2. To assess, treat and develop individual care/treatment plans for a range of paediatric
conditions, including for children with complex clinical, social and psychiatric needs,
and monitor outcomes.
3. To be responsible for re-assessing client care as treatment progresses and review and
update treatment programmes as appropriate.
4. To assess, advise and treat children with a range of conditions including children with
severe physical and cognitive impairment and disabilities both individually and in
groups.
5. To be responsible for own development and actively seek to maintain continuous
professional development, identifying areas for development and discussing these with
the senior physiotherapy colleagues.
6. To maintain a high standard of clinical practice by keeping up to date with research
and clinical techniques, attending courses, and self learning to ensure evidence based
practice.
7. To be able to analyse clinical and social information from a range of sources and
integrate it into the Physiotherapy assessment and the development of the
care/treatment plan.
8. To provide specialist advice to other health, social care, educational and voluntary
sector services.
9. To monitor, reassess and liaise with other services regarding equipment needs to
ensure that the most appropriate equipment is available to facilitate independence.
10. To be involved in the organisation, management and running of hydrotherapy groups.
11. To work closely with the wheelchair service and orthotist, and to have knowledge of
appropriate equipment.
Team and Service
1. To attend relevant meetings within the service, Physiotherapy professional groups,
and other meetings within Learning and Children’s Services where the contribution of a
therapist will enhance the level of information, have a positive contribution towards
change, or positively influence the outcome for the needs of a service for children.
2. Contribute to the annual service team plan and other business plans as necessary.
3. To provide information relating to service complaints.
4. To ensure that clinical and non-clinical incidents and near misses are recorded and to
co-operate with investigations.

6. To support the security arrangements of the The Moor Lane Centre, Royal Borough of
Kingston, family homes and school premises.
7. To contribute to audit, and data collection, in order to develop protocols and further
develop Physiotherapy services, for all children eligible for the service.
8. To recognise when additional support is needed to handle complex clinical situations
and those involved complex communication.
Communication

contribution of each member.
2. To work collaboratively in partnership with colleagues in the team and service and with
other agencies.
3. To demonstrate flexible communication skills where there may be barriers to

social communication difficulties or where English is not their first language.
4. To communicate effectively with children, parents, carers, teaching staff or other health
professional ensuring participation of all involved in effective management of the
child’s complex physical, cognitive, perceptual and /or behavioural development
needs. This requires skills in persuasion, motivation, gaining consent and trust and
being able to explain complex issues in plain language.
5. To be able to use negotiation and influencing skills with service users and colleagues
who may challenge professional opinions, decisions or obstruct delivery of
intervention.
6. To ensure all written communication is presented in a professional manner.
7. To ensure that all communications about a child are copied to the parents/carer.
8. To provide information as requested to other bodies supporting or protecting the child.
Performance
1. To analyse and understand the impact on the child and the Physiotherapy treatment,
of various treatment plans from other disciplines. This includes interpreting medical,
educational and psychological assessments of the patient.
2. To work to standards set by HCPC, CSP and national standards, eg NSF.
3. To participate in in-service training and supervision of Physiotherapy students when on
site.
4. To attend school reviews, medicals, wheelchair and special Seating clinics where
necessary.
5. To participate in professional, clinical, and organisational audit and quality initiatives.
6. To work within the local clinical governance frameworks, including the ability to audit
own practice.
7. To comply with requests from the Education Authority to contribute to a child’s
statutory assessment following departmental guidelines and those set by the
Physiotherapy professional bodies and the Education Authority, with support where
necessary.
8. To be responsible for ensuring that equipment is safe to use, and for the safe use of it
by children during treatment. To report any faults to the relevant person in a timely
manner.
9. To assist senior colleagues in training other staff, both medical and teaching, to ensure
the integration of Physiotherapy treatment into the multi-disciplinary care package.
