POST GRADUATE QUALIFICATIONS IN ADVANCED PHYSIOTHERAPY Paediatric Neuro-developmental Physiotherapy (CHLDGC21) Wednesday 23rd to Wednesday 30th October 2013 (excluding the weekend) The course is a taught module with supporting reading material, tutorials, lectures, and workshops designed specifically for students undertaking the MSc, PG Diploma or PG Certificate in Paediatric Physiotherapy. Topics covered in lectures and tutorials & workshops vary slightly from year to year but will generally include: Typical human development, deviations from the norm and neuroplasticity Physiotherapy and Medical management for Cerebral palsy and movements disorders, including ICF & GMFCS Balance and sensory control of balance, postural management and strength training for children with complex disability Introduction to motor control and anatomy & physiology of the Brain, Spine, Nerves and Muscles Physiotherapy management for paediatric neurological conditions (eg Head Injuries / Cortex disorders / Spinal dysraphysm / Spinal lesions / Epilepsy / Dystonia’s / Paediatric stroke / cerebellar disorders / chorea / muscular dystrophies / neuropathies / Charcot Marie Tooth) Understand, Select, Apply and Interpret selected standardised assessment techniques and outcome measures regularly used in neuro-physiotherapy including Movement ABC, GMFM, Baileys, PEDI, including their role in evaluating efficacy of interventions, disease progression or resolution (assessment of movement, function, joints, muscles). A variety of clinical case studies in the context of problem solving exercises This module runs for 6 days in Term 2. The module is a component of the Postgraduate Paediatric Physiotherapy programme at UCL. Participants may undertake the course as a discrete unit for CPD or, if assessed, may use the 15 credits towards completion of the MSc or Diploma at UCL. This module is assessed by a 2 hour written exam, likely to take place on Monday 2nd December 2013. Course requirements Applicant’s should meet UCL’s usual criteria for studying at Masters level and hold an appropriate physiotherapy qualification. Applicant’s hoping to transfer credits to the MSc in Physiotherapy should have a BSc in Physiotherapy at a 2:1 or above, or an approved Diploma in Physiotherapy together with evidence of appropriate clinical and/or teaching experience. We expect students to have had at least 2 years postqualification clinical experience and UK state registration is preferred (http://www.hpc-uk.org/).
