Children's Occupational Therapy - South Wiltshire
Children's Occupational Therapy provides assessment, treatment and advice and support
to help children with physical disabilities achieve maximum potential in functional skill.
This includes indirect work through parents, preschools and schools. Services are
provided into mainstream and special schools, playgroups and nurseries.
Who can use the service :
Children aged 0 -16 years (> 19 years if they attend Exeter House School) requiring
occupational therapy, for assessment, treatment and advice on functional difficulties as a
result of a disability or a complex health need. Referrals accepted from consultants, GPs
or school doctors for children who live within our catchment area.
Paediatric Physiotherapy - Salisbury
Paediatric Physiotherapy provides assessment, treatment and advice and support to help
children with physical disabilities achieve maximum potential in functional skill. This
includes indirect work through parents, preschools and schools.
The Paediatric service also provides assessment and treatment for musculoskeletal
injuries for all under 16 year olds.Appointments are offerered at the hospital.
Who can use the service?
Children aged 0-16yrs requiring physiotherapy. Assessment and treatment referred by
Consultant (Paediatrician or other), GP, Health Visitor or school Doctor living within our
(SDH) catchment area.
Acute service covers children while in-patients on Sarum/NICU/Beatrice Wards
Speech & Language Therapy
General Description : Speech & Language Therapy provides a range of specialist
services to children with communication impairments. Interventions are designed for
individual need, following assessment. They may be in the form of: advice, direct work
with the child or programmes involving parents, schools and other services.
Children’s Disability Team - South & West
The Children’s Disability Teams provide or commission a range of services to meet
assessed need. These include: information, advice and advocacy; direct work with
children and with families; a range of short breaks and inclusion services, domestic
support, paediatric occupational therapy, and Learning Disability community nursing.
Direct Payments can sometimes be given in the place of arranged services.
Who can use the service :
Any child under the age of 18yrs where there is a physical or mental impairment which
has a substantial and long-term effect on their ability to carry out daily living activities
compared with other children of the same age.
SCHOOL NURSES
School Nurses have a wide remit offering parenting advice, sexual health information, enuresis
support and stop smoking groups in addition to working with schools on managing pupils health and
medical needs including drawing up Care Plans. As part of a government initiative they do height and
weight checks on reception and year 6 pupils (with parental permission), immunise year10 pupils
against diphtheria, tetanus, polio and MMR and Year 8 pupil against cervical cancer.School Nurses
can provide advice and support on any health matter related to children and young people and can
also signpost to other agencies.
