Chinese task 2 – teacher planning Language: Chinese Year: 10 Indicative time: 4 hours Topic: Food Task: Design a survey to find out the five most popular Chinese foods for a school canteen and report the findings using a spreadsheet. Context: This task is part of a unit of work on Chinese food. Students have learnt Chinese characters and sentences for some typical Chinese food, compared Chinese and western-style foods and have discussed the cultural significance of food. Students form groups of 2-3. Each group is assigned another Chinese class in the school from Year 7, 8, 9 or 10 as their target class for the survey. Using Microsoft Word, each group designs a survey in Chinese for their target class to find out the 5 most popular Chinese foods. These foods must be suitable for sale in a school canteen. The language in the survey must be appropriate for the target class. Each group surveys their target class. Each group uses Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to present the results of their survey. Each group prepares a report for a group of Chinese-speaking canteen organisers. This may be in the form of a role play. o The report is in Chinese. o The report should include the results on a spreadsheet and a chart created using Microsoft Excel. Each group is to keep a logbook to indicate the progress of the survey and the contribution made by each member of the group. Students can either obtain a blank logbook form (created by the teacher) from their teacher or they can record this electronically using Microsoft Word. Description: Quality Teaching: Higher-order thinking – students manipulate their knowledge, both linguistic and cultural, of Chinese food and transform the knowledge into a set of appropriate survey questions. Student direction – choice in designing the survey. Connectedness – students recognise and explore connections between classroom knowledge and situations outside the classroom e.g. suitable food for school canteen purposes. Criteria: use vocabulary and grammar that are relevant to your target class when designing the survey use your own words when presenting the results of your survey to the canteen organisers use appropriate grammatical and linguistic structures to communicate clearly. Instructions: Task: Imagine that your school canteen organisers want to add some popular Chinese food to the canteen menu and they are getting help from various classes, including yours, to find out the popular Chinese food among the school population. The organisers want your class to design and conduct surveys to find out the 5 most popular Chinese foods among the Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 Chinese classes. On completion, you are to analyse the survey results and give a report in Chinese to the organisers, who are Chinese speakers. Planning: Form groups of 2-3. Obtain a target Chinese class from your teacher. Design your survey in Chinese – make a draft first on paper. Make sure this survey is appropriate for your target class to find out the 5 most popular Chinese foods. Remember, the food must be suitable for your school canteen. Keep a logbook (using Microsoft Word) to indicate the progress of the survey and the contribution made by each member of your group. You can either obtain a printed ‘logbook’ copy from your teacher to record this or you can record the progress on computer using Microsoft Word. Don’t forget to save this file and give it a name. Using Microsoft Word: Create your survey using Microsoft Word. Don’t forget to save and name your file. If you have difficulty in creating this and/or using the software, ask your teacher or a knowledgeable classmate for help. Print out your completed survey and make enough copies for each member of the class you will survey. Arrange a time to survey your target class. Analysing your survey: Use Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to enter the information you obtain from your survey. Don’t forget to save this file. If you have difficulty in creating this and/or using this software, ask your teacher or a knowledgeable classmate for help. Print this spreadsheet together with a chart created with Microsoft Excel. Write/prepare a report in Chinese based on your findings. Presentation: Present the results of your survey to the ‘Chinese-speaking canteen organisers’. o The report should be in Chinese (either in writing or orally). o The report should include the results on a spreadsheet and a chart. Completion of task: Hand in your group’s logbook, your survey results and report either by email as attachments to your teacher (ask your teacher for their email address).
