Background Reading for Meeting 3 May 2013 1. PUGPIG and FUTURE From David Hicks Digital Art Director, Adobe DPS, iPad, Android Tablet & Mobile Projects - Future Many thanks for your email. I hope you are well. Adobe DPS is a great tool for a print magazine team who want to move onto iPad. It utilises InDesign, with plugins and it really is a seamless experience for the team. Personally for me, its the way forward for most publishers. I love the ease of use, end result, add-ons, analytics are second to none, the roadmap for Adobe, etc However, if you are on a smaller budget and want to innovate yourself - I would advise speaking to Jonny Kaldor at Pugpig, (Grazia, The Week, Campaign). Paul Hudson at Future will also be able to advise you in more detail - he created Future Folio and I am sure he can help. He's on Linkedin, (so you can see his profile, job etc) and his email is paul.hudson@futurenet.com Paul may well be able to provide you with a potential trial period for our software - and I definitely think it would work for your clients / bloggers. Works with feeds etc. Have a look at the Football Week iPad app. Its so innovative! I hope that helps? Feel free to get in touch if you need to know more. Kind regards David 2. TALKING NEW MEDIA Douglas Hebbard Publisher / Editor of Talking New Media http://talkingnewmedia.blogspot.com.au/ I'm not really a tech guy, or even a designer. The people I talk to about platforms are my readers. The only thing that if vitally importantly to be is that the platform allow for native publishing – that is, publishing designed for that specific platform. PDF systems allow you to view the printed publication on a mobile or tablet device but are not native to that platform. If you are building a new platform you will want to talk to publishers, of course. The only real advice I can give you is that publishers are very price conscious which is why so many are making very bad decisions. I think that rather than a revenue-share solution or a fee solution, a subscription solution could be something that works. This is the direction both Adobe and Microsoft is going in, and it mirrors the way web hosting works, as well as the DIY app building systems work. 3. BAKERFRAMEWORK - OPENSOURCE From Chris English: Yes, I'm using the in5 Indesign to Html5 plugin from Ajarproductions ( http://www.ajaproductions.com ) - to export to the bakerframework. Tom at Overnight Buses Travel Mag We use HTML, not PDF's. So we skip InDesign completely for Photoshop and Dreamweaver. The text is HTML based, and the images are just JPEGs, artfully blended in with the html background. In fact, we used the Baker example book as our base and just inserted larger images and changed the font/margins. No paper version, just the iPad version. The magazine is completely static, because there is just two of us, myself and the designer. Our second issue had a full-size video cover that someone made for us, but other than that, there is no interactivity as it would be too much work (we both have day jobs). Find new word for mag . video, imagery, images immersed model… Jorge Antonio, Tello Aliaga, Presidente / President Hi Rosemary, Here are my answers: Would you use Baker Framework again? Yes and No. If I created a new eBook in the ePub format (HTML/CSS) I would definitely use Baker to convert it into an App, as it is the easiest way to create an App from HTML/CSS. But I have recently learned how to create iOS Apps using the Corona SDK, so if I were to start from scratch (not from an eBook) I would create my Book App in Corona. Please keep in mind that Corona is a full programming environment, so you need to be a strong programmer to be able to create a Book App with Corona. Baker is perfect for web designers/developers that only know HTML/CSS The only reason I would not consider Baker is because HTML/Javascript is not native code and it runs slower. My children's books are mostly graphics so I run into memory and speed issues. But most books are text, and those would run fine. What functions do you like about it? I like the global menu and page sliding features. What would you like to see improved? Speed is a big drawback. But I don't think this can be improved in Baker. This is an issue with Apple's implementation of WebKit My books are heavy in graphics and javacript, so there is sometimes a white flash when turning pages (this seems to be an Apple/WebKit issue, not Baker) A javascript to Objective-C bridge would be nice (to be able to access some more powerful features of iOS). Global way to control background music (for a children's book, for example) would be good. I was able to accomplish this with many Javascript tricks, but it should be easier to do. Why did you choose to use it? I checked out many options, and Baker was the best. It worked easier/better. I hope this helps and good luck with your project.
