Saturday Teaching Opportunity Available at
CEISMC ~ Georgia Tech K.I.D.S. Club
CEISMC at Georgia Tech is now soliciting instructor applications for our 2011/2012 K.I.D.S.
Club Program (Kids Interested in Discovering Science). This opportunity is open to outstanding
classroom teachers, informal educators, or undergraduate and graduate students with an
interest in sharing hands-on activities in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology
with students in 2nd through 5th grades. CEISMC’s K.I.D.S. Club is designed to enrich children's
natural curiosity and enthusiasm for science, mathematics, engineering, and technology.
Students are invited to participate in one Saturday Session per season, or two per year on the
Georgia Tech campus. We invite you to submit a K.I.D.S. Club program session
proposal.
Instructor commitment options:
Fall: Nov. 3 and Dec. 1, 2012
Spring (tentative dates): Feb. 9 and Mar. 9, 2013
Or, teach all four dates.
Instructors must be able to commit to both sessions during a season, as the courses taught will
be identical. During each Saturday Session, an instructor teaches no more than 20 students
during each of three 55-minute sessions (for 2nd/3rd grade students 0r 4th/5th grade students).
The sessions will run from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, but instructors must arrive by 8:30 am.
Wide latitude is given to instructors as they prepare Saturday program sessions, but the
following criteria should guide course development:
1).
Sessions must be based on sound, fundamental principles of science, mathematics,
engineering and technology.
2).
Hands-on activities must comprise at least 90% of the course content and must
illustrate the instructor's objectives. While we want students to have fun, we want sessions
to stress learning by doing and expect students to develop some understanding of the
content embodied in the activities. CEISMC program directors can offer some guidance in
developing sessions.
3).
Cooperative learning and teamwork should be encouraged, and instructors should plan for
possible variance in ability and background of the students.
If you are interested in providing exciting hands-on science, mathematics, engineering, and/or
technology experiences for young students, please complete the K.I.D.S. Club Instructor
Application. Please return by September 21, 2013 for fall.
