Website: www.pierce.ctc.edu/chemistry/home.htm Text: Chemical Principles, H. Steven Stoker, 10th Edition, ISBN # 9780321666048 Supplies:Scientific Calculator, three-ring binder, ruled notebook paper, dividers, writing implements (a pencil or black/blue pen and a brightly colored pen), folder for homework. Course Description Chemistry 139 provides a solid foundation in chemistry fundamentals for students who intend to take the three quarter Inorganic Chemistry class (161, 162, 163), and have taken no previous chemistry classes, took chemistry a while ago, or have a weak background in chemistry. It is a quantitative course which focuses on how mathematics is used in chemistry, and requires that students have completed math 98. Concepts covered include scientific method, graphing, lab report writing, math tools for chemists, atomic structure, nomenclature, periodic properties, chemical equations and quantitative calculations, and stoichiometry. Course Expectations Attendance There is a strong correlation in all college chemistry classes between attendance and final grade. Attendance is not taken, but regular attendance will greatly improve your chances of success. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get notes, assignments, and announcements from classmates. . In the event of long or serious illnesses or other emergencies, please leave an email or phone message for the instructor. You must call or email if you miss an exam or important deadline. Make-up exams will be given only for students with legitimate excuses and must be made up in a timely manner (depending on circumstances) when you return. A 5% penalty will be deducted for taking an exam late. You must notify me prior to the exam. Outside of Class Study As with other college courses, you should plan on spending about 2 hours outside of class for each class hour. Thus you should expect to spend about 10 hours per week reading the Chem 139 text, doing homework, and completing other assignments. I expect that you will have read relevant sections of the text before coming to lecture and be ready to ask questions and discuss and apply the material. After lecture, you should be ready to do the homework associated with that topic. Because the subject matter builds on itself, getting behind is a dangerous “slippery slope.” Help Help is always available! Be proactive about asking questions and requesting help. I am available in person from 9 am – 12 noon every day in my office (Rai 217) and I try to check email each evening. Tutoring is also available in the Tutoring Center (Cascade 5__). Special Needs If you feel you have special needs, please see me and/or talk with the Pierce College Special Needs Coordinator (253-964-6526). Please do this early in the class so that proper arrangements can be made. If English is not your first language, let me know if you would like to use a dictionary during exams or receive extra help with written assignments. Honesty Students caught cheating will receive a 0 for the item of work in question, may receive a zero for the entire course, and are subject to college disciplinary proceedings. Emergency Procedures Call 911 and then Campus Safety(6751) in response to an imminent threat to persons or property. In the event of an evacuation (intermittent horns & strobes), gather all personal belongings and leave the building using the nearest available safe exit. Be prepared to be outside for one hour and stay a minimum of 200 feet from any building or structure. So long as it is safe to do so students are expected to stay on campus and return to class after evacuations that last less then 15 minutes. Do not attempt to re-enter the building until instructed by an Evacuation Director (identified by orange vests) or by three horn blasts or bell rings. Please notify the nearest Campus Safety Officer or Evacuation Director of any one left in the building or in need of assistance. Fort Steilacoom Campus Safety (253) 964-6751 Puyallup Campus Safety (253) 840-8481 If there is emergency closure of the college due to widespread illness or inclement weather, adjustments may need to be made to the syllabus and/or mode of instruction in order to achieve the course objectives. Assessments of Learning Your mastery course outcomes will be assessed in a variety of ways. Grades reflect mastery of course content, with a small contribution for effort. Activity Homework (12 assignments) Exams (4) Quiz (1) Class Projects (5+) Learning to Write Lab Reports (~5) Final Exam (1) Total Points each 5 100 50 ~10 ~10 150 Total Points 60 400 50 ~50 ~50 150 ~700 pts Homework Homework is to be assembled in a notebook, in the order which we cover the material, and turned in at the beginning of each exam. It will be graded (5 points/ chapter) for completeness. (60 points total). Late homework will earn far fewer points. Extra credit problems are worth 1 pt each and should be turned in on a separate sheet –NOT in your homework notebook. Extra Credit Few extra credit projects are given, so don’t neglect the regular assignments and hope that you can make up for it later with extra credit. No individual extra credit is ever given. The following grading scale will be used.
