Waste Education Program
For schools and kindergartens
Moreland City Council is offering FREE waste education sessions for primary schools,
secondary schools and kindergartens to help them achieve their sustainability goals.
These waste education sessions are designed to engage students on important issues
relating to waste and the environment. Sessions encourage students to think about
how the choices they make can affect their local and natural environments. The
sessions are aimed at developing a life-long commitment to sustainable waste
management practises.
These education sessions complement several domains of the Australian
Curriculum and Victorian Essential Learning Standard (AusVELS).
School sessions
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Students will be introduced to the concept of the three Rs, allowing them to identify opportunities to reduce
their material usage whilst encouraging them to reuse materials for other purposes. Students will learn
where their recyclables go and some of the uses for recycled materials. The session is ended with a recycling
relay game which will test their newly gained knowledge.
Prep to year 8, 30-45 minute session
Litter in the Environment
Students will learn where litter comes from and where it goes. Students will discuss the origins of litter and its
effect on our local and natural environments. Students will participate in a River Relay game which
shows the types of pollution picked up by a river on its journey to the ocean.
Prep to year 8, 30-45 minute session
Waste Wise Shopping
Students will learn the concept of waste wise shopping and how to reduce waste by changing purchasing
patterns. Students will learn how buying certain types of products can not only help save the environment but
also money. An activity will ask students to analyse some common household products and look at ways of
purchasing these products with less waste.
Year 3 to year 12, 30-45 minute session
Rubbish Free Lunches
Students will learn how daily activities impact on the environment and the small steps everyone can take to
reduce this impact. Not only does this lesson help to reduce the school’s waste and litter but can also
promote healthy eating. Students will be asked to analyse their own lunch boxes to see if there are ways that
they can reduce their day to day school lunch waste. This lesson can also be given as a presentation to an
assembly group.
Year 1 to year 12, 30-45 minute session
Worms and Composting
Experience the world of worms, worm farming and composting. Children are introduced to the basic
differences between a worm farm and a compost bin and their importance in helping us reduce organic waste
and keeping it out of landfill. Students will learn how these systems work and how to look after one at home
or school. They will also have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the worms and see a worm
farm in action

Kindergarten sessions
Kindergartens and Childcare Centres can book a waste education session for children aged 3-5 years.
Sessions run for 30 minutes for a maximum of 30 children. Sessions are available on the following topics:
Where does my rubbish go?
Children will learn about the journey of rubbish, which products can go in their recycling bin and what
happens to their recyclables after they have been picked up. An exciting recycling relay game allows children
to test their newly gained knowledge.
Litter Detectives
Where does litter come from and where does it go? Children will learn the origins of litter and its effects on
our local and natural environment. Children will be entertained with a short story followed by a river relay
activity which shows the types of pollution a river picks up on its journey to the ocean.
Walter the worm
Children have the opportunity to meet Walter the worm. Children will have the opportunity to take a look at
his home and learn what he can and can’t eat. The children also have the option of getting up close and
