Dear Colleagues,
Since last year (issue 8, 9, 10 and 11, 2012) – concerning our transition to the
new rating system, European standards and our application to Sсopus database –
beside the fact that the articles are reviewed, edited (including the parts in English) and
fully referred to CAB Abstracts and partially to 30 other databases of CAB International
which exist only online, we have been observing the new requirements of Sсopus
database (since February 2012) for compulsory transliteration with Latin characters of
article references and quotations inside the text.
The Editors’ Team of the Agricultural Sciences magazine agreed with the
recommendation of the Institute of Bulgarian Language to the Bulgarian Academy of
Sciences that the transliteration system applied in new identity documents must be
used; this system will function as a standard national transliteration system. It was
promulgated in State Gazette, issue 33 / 1999, with amendments promulgated in State
Gazette, issue 14 / 2000 and issue 19 / 13.03.2009. According to this system, each
Bulgarian letter corresponds to a Latin letter or Latin letter combination.
BASIC RULES OF TRANSLITERATION
Art. 4. The system of transliteration of Bulgarian characters into Latin characters is
as follows:

Art. 5. (1) The Bulgarian letter combinations listed below are transliterated with Latin
letter combinations as follows:
1. the letter combination “дж” is written and transliterated with Latin letters as “dzh”;
2. the letter combination “дз” is written and transliterated with Latin letters as “dz”;
3. the letter combination “ьо” is written and transliterated with Latin letters as “yo”;
4. the letter combination “йо” is written and transliterated with Latin letters as “yo”.
(2) The letter combination “ия”, at the end of the word, is written and transliterated as
“ia”, e.g. Мария, София – ia
Art. 6. The name of the Bulgarian state is written with Latin letters in accordance
with the already established tradition. The letter ъ in the name Bulgaria is traditionally
transliterated as u – Bulgaria.
Examples: Yordanov, Yablanitsa, Yundola, Lyuben, Stoyanov, Bozhilov,
Dzhebel, Knyazhevo, Chirpan, Pashov, Cenov, Kardzhali, etc.
Note 1. The letters Ъ and ъ are transliterated as А and а.
Note 2. Each part of composite geographic names is written with Latin letters and is
capitalized:
